Looking at names for Northwest Guilford soccer and Western Guilford baseball fields

Public Comment Period Open for Naming of Two Athletic Facilities

The Guilford County Board of Education approved opening a 30-day period of public comment on the naming of the Western High baseball field and the Northwest High soccer field.

Guilford County Schools received a nomination from the community to name the Northwest High soccer field the “Coach Bob Yow Soccer Field.” The name honors longtime Northwest High coach Bob Yow, who was the first coach and founder of the school’s soccer program. In addition, he led the girls’ basketball team for 24 years, accumulating an overall record of 370-241. He also taught math and served in several leadership positions during his tenure at Northwest. Yow passed away in June of 2012.

The district also received a nomination from the community to name the baseball field at Western High the “Jaiden Britt Memorial Field.” Jaiden Britt was the young son of Western High alumnus Clay Britt; Jaiden was tragically killed in a local boating accident.

Input on the names may be made to gcscomments@gcsnc.com or via courier or U.S. mail to District Relations Department, Attn: Naming of Grimsley Football Field, Guilford County Schools, 712 N. Eugene St., Greensboro, NC 27401. The district will be receiving comments until August 24, 2013.

  1. I think the Western Guilford baseball field already has a name in waiting. The name is of a former coach to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of the state championships of 84 and 85.

  2. I mean no disrespect to the family of the boy that lost his life, but I do not support the request to name the Western Guilford High School Baseball field in his memory. Andy, thanks for letting us know about this. I have sent my comments to gcscomments@gcsnc.com.

  3. Western should go ahead and name the soccer field after George Kennedy, the most successful coach in the school’s history. 40 plus conference championships and three state titles between the boys/girls programs.

George is WG’s equivalent to Herk DeGraw (Grimsley) and Zach Osbourne (Page).

  4. George Kennedy is still coaching. He is the Varsity Girls’ Soccer coach at Bishop McGuinness. I did not realize he coached both boys and girls at WG.
