Rocky Mount HS’s Tashawn Mabry cleared and set to announce college choice soon

Rocky Mount High School basketball standout Tashawn Mabry shook hands with defense attorney Joe Hester in a Rocky Mount courtroom Wednesday afternoon after he was found not guilty of assault by pointing a gun.

For those who followed Mabry in the State 3-A playoff they remember what he did as he took out Northern and Northeast Guilford on the way to his team winning the 3-A NCHSAA basketball title…

In the 3-A East Regionals at East Carolina it appeared Mabry did just that during Rocky Mount’s run to the championship when he played, perhaps, the best game of his career against Northeast Guilford in the East Regional final. A 37-point outburst, including 16 straight in the fourth quarter.

Rocky Mount High School basketball standout Tashawn Mabry shook hands with defense attorney Joe Hester in a Rocky Mount courtroom Wednesday afternoon after he was found not guilty of assault by pointing a gun.

Jessie Lynch, 23, testified that, on Dec. 27 at a housing project in Little Raleigh, Mabry pointed a gun at her and at the head of her boyfriend, Tronyale Daniel, 27.

The next day, a warrant was obtained for Dewayne Avent, 18, who allegedly shot Daniel in the chest once. Mabry testified that he never saw Avent at the scene nor any guns. Daniel subsequently died from the wound after being taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Assistant Distict Attorney Caroline Quinn represented the state.

During her testimony, Lynch said that before she saw Avent shoot Daniel, Mabry pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Daniels’ head. After the shot that killed Daniel, she said Mabry pointed the gun at her, and then got into a vehicle driven by Mabry’s girlfriend, Michelle Park, and drove off.

Mabry testified that after he talked with Daniel and was heading back to his vehicle, he heard a gunshot.

  1. Wow, the old Wilson-Rocky Mount rivalry ain’t what it used to be when a Wilson lawyer will defend a RM basketball player. LOL to see Joe Hester, one of the best Fike athletes in the mid ’60’s defending Tayshawn. Hester’s a UNC man, so that might mean mabry’s headed to the hill instead of the farm.
