Jonathan Frye outstanding boys basketball player for the Northern Guilford Nighthawks…Played at Tulane in college, suffered a bad series of concussions while playing the game, transferred to Appalachian State University and tried to revive his career, but it would never go right for him again…Last time I saw him he was working at the now-closed Omega Sports Store on Battleground Avenue…Great young man, and he always stood out, with that bright red hair….

Elissa Cunane played on two girls NCHSAA State Championship teams at Northern Guilford and she went to excel in women’s basketball at N.C. State University…She played in high school for Coach Kim Furlough at NG, and at N.C. State for Wes Moore…She will always be remembered for her big smile, that is what they called her at N.C. State, “The Big Smile”…Great young lady and mom and dad, Sharon and Dan Cunane, very proud of Elissa…First ever that I interviewed her, I asked what the game experience at NG had been like, and I will never forget her answer, and she might have been in the 9th or 10th grade at the time, and she said it has been, “Exhilarating”…

Samantha Coffer played on the early girls basketball teams at Northern for Coach Kim Furlough, and she went on to become I believe the first female basketball player from NG to earn a college scholarship and she attended and played at Elon University…She had a sister, Amanda, who also played for Coach Furlough and the Nighthawks, and now Amanda works for the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department….

Keenan Allen was the first big name football player to come through Northern Guilford HS, and then there were many more that followed…Wide receiver, played defensive back, he returned kicks, and he also played quite a bit of Wildcat QB…I was in the SunTrust Bank one Friday afternoon and the lady who was taking care of my deposit said she had a son who played high school football…I asked where he played an she said at Grimsley HS, and Keenan was a freshman there at that time…I told her I was going to broadcast the Grimsley game that night, and I would look for her son…On the opening kickoff of the game, Keenan Allen, her son, took the kickoff back 99 yards for a Grimsley Whirlies touchdown, and then he kept doing the same type of thing, when he arrived at Northern Guilford…One Friday night, the Northeast Guilford Rams were leading the NG Nighthawks by a touchdown, and NEG Rams’ Coach Tommy Pursley told his punter, on this next punt whatever you do, don’t kick the ball to NG’s Keenan Allen…Well the NEG punter messed up, and he kicked the ball to Keenan, who took it back for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown….Keenan went on to play college football for the California Bears, after being heavily recruited by Alabama, and now he resides in Los Angeles, California, where he has been a star WR for the San Diego Chargers/now LA Chargers for nearly a decade…..

TJ Logan was the star running back for the NG Nighthawks…Was on, I believe at least three 3-AA State Championship teams, but the one I remember most was the 2012 game vs. Charlotte Catholic and Elijah Hood, where TJ scored 8 touchdowns and he had 510 yards rushing….Just a taste of what he did his senior year at Northern Guilford:Rushed for 3,146 yards and 47 touchdowns as a senior, averaging more than 10.7 yards per carry, despite playing in the fourth quarter only twice • Had 25 receptions for 344 yards and six touchdowns • Also completed all eight pass attempts for 144 yards and had 12 punt returns for 241 yards (20.1 avg.) • Rushed for 5,614 yards and 85 scores his last two seasons in at Northern Guilford • Set NCHSAA records with 510 yards and eight touchdowns in the state championship game as Northern Guilford completed an undefeated season and won the 3AA title….TJ Logan played for the North Carolina Tar Heels in college and in the pros he was with Coach Bruce Arians on the Arizona Cardinals and on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers squads…TJ always a very strong kickoff return man during his time in the NFL…Later played for former his college coach Larry Fedora, at the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL…Not sure where, or what, TJ Logan is doing today…

Coach Johnny Roscoe was the first-ever head football coach for the Northern Guilford Nighthawks and he started out fielding a JV team his first year at the school, and the JV Nighthawks played their games on the football field at Guilford College…Coach Roscoe was a Guilford College graduate and he played wide receiver for Guilford back in his college days….He won State Championships down in South Carolina before he joined the NG Nighthawks as their head coach….Coach Roscoe coached both Keenan Allen and TJ Logan and while at NG, Johnny Roscoe-coached NG Nighthawk teams won four(4) NCHSAA 3-AA State Championships, and to take it a crazy step further, I announced every one of those State Title games…We went from Raleigh, to Chapel Hill, to Winston-Salem and covered a lot of ground on the road to N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest stadiums, for those Title Games…The most memorable one of all was the one in Winston-Salem, at BB&T Field, where TJ Logan scored the 8 touchdowns and he rushed for 510 yards in that Championship Game…Four State Championships and tons of top talent coming through Northern Guilford High School under the tutelage of Coach Johnny Roscoe…Keenan Allen, TJ Logan, Daniel Downing, Austin Coltrane, Rocco Scarfone, Christian McCain, John McBeth, Chris Ripberger, man I could go on and one, but better stop there, before I leave the whole passel out…..They named the stadium after him at Northern Guilford HS, and he is a name that will go on forever in the history of high school football, in Guilford County….

That 2010 Men’s Golf team was coached by Chris Jones, a Page HS and Lenoir-Rhyne University graduate, who is now the head men’s and women’s golf coach at Pfeiffer University….Chris Jones was the Head Golf Coach at Northern Guilford High School and he started the program from scratch in the fall of 2007. While at Northern Guilford, the Nighthawks won the 2010 3A NCHSAA Men’s Golf Championship, in the school’s third year of existence. He also guided the women’s program to runner-up finishes in the 2011 & 2013 3A NCHSAA Women’s Golf Championship. Ten of his former players went on to play college golf at NCAA Division I, II and III levels.

Well, we took a blast into the past to bring you all of these Northern Guilford HS Hall of Fame memories…That is all we can share for now, and all we have for the time being for you…May add in more later on….Time to return to 2024, and this Thursday afternoon….

  1. No Kim Furlough? Is there a requirement about how long you have to be out of the school?

  2. Hall of Fame!?!?!? At Northern? The school has only been around for 17 years…

Seems like they decided to do it because Page started the trend a while back. There is no way a school like Northern can keep this going, there are not enough numbers of great athletes yet just given the short time span of history of the school. Think about 5 years from now, who will they pick to be in the Hall??? Bad oversight by the AD to do this so soon. You gotta give a school a SOLID 40-50 years before even THINKING about a hall of fame…

  3. What about the 2017 3-A State Champion Baseball Team from Northern Guilford? Cotter, Pike, Outzs, JT Jarrett, Logan King, Millwee, plus Kimrey the coach. Only Guilford County team to win a State Baseball Title in the last 25 years. I think and predict that Coach Kim Furlough will go in with the next class of the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame.
