Minnesota Battles Back to Top UNCG Softball, 8-6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team welcomed Big Ten opponent Minnesota to the UNCG Softball Stadium for a Tuesday night battle, where the Golden Gophers came from behind to win 8-6 in eight innings.

This was the 10th meeting between the two teams.

How it happened:

After sitting down three Golden Gophers in the top of the first, UNCG put two runs on the board in the bottom of the frame with one out. Grace Loftin hit her fourth home run of the season over the left center wall, scoring Brooklynn Maxwell for a 2-0 lead.

Minnesota cut the deficit to one, 2-1, with Addison Leschber’s double to left center.

UNCG’s bats broke open the game in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on two hits and one error. Jorde Chartrand led off the inning with a single to right center. With the bases loaded and no outs, UNCG was thrown out at home twice before Brooklynn Maxwell hit a bases-clearing triple, her third of the season, for a 5-1 advantage.

The Golden Gophers added another run in the top of the third as Morgan DeBord doubled to lead off and Kayla Chavez singled through the right side to score DeBord, 5-2.

Minnesota tied the game in the top of the fifth at five with a RBI single, RBI ground out, and a sacrifice fly. UNCG took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth as Samantha Beck hit a high fly ball out to center field, scoring Loftin from third for a 6-5 advantage.

The Golden Gophers responded in the top of the seventh as Taylor Krapf tied the game at six with her RBI single.

In the top of the eighth, Minnesota had a runner on second with two outs and Sydney Strelow singled down the left field line for a 7-6 lead. Jess Oakland followed by reaching on an error and Strelow made her way around the bases for the Golden Gophers’ eighth run of the game, 8-6. The Spartans saw one base runner in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to respond to Minnesota.

Four Spartans had multi-hit games.
Maxwell went 2-for-5 with three RBI, one run scored, and a triple.
Loftin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, one walk, and one home run.
Anna White went 2-for-4.
Jorde Chartrand went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Rhyann Jones and Chartrand each tossed 4.0 innings.
