GREENSBORO, N.C. — Meredith College won two softball games at Guilford College on Saturday. The Avenging Angels took game one–a suspended contest from Feb. 28–by a score of 11-10 in eight innings. The Quakers dropped the nightcap, 9-0, in six innings.
The two teams started game one with the score tied 9-9 in the fourth inning. The Angels plated a single run in the seventh inning. In the bottom half, the Quakers tied the contest–and forced extra
innings–after Kayli Blankenship singled and then scored an unearned run off an MC throwing error.
In the top of the eighth, Erica Occena was placed on second base per the international tie-breaker. She was bunted to third base and then came home on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Bucklin.
In the bottom of the frame, Darby Kozan was put on second base and moved to third on a single from Anna Wolfe. Delaney Taylor, however, was struck out by Taylor Jackson to end the contest. Jackson improved to 16-8 and struck out five batters in the game.
Courtney Lackey (7-9) was pinned with the loss for Guilford. She allowed 12 hits and six earned runs. Sabrina Moreno went 4-5 with a double and two runs to lead GC hitters. Taylor, Makayla Crawford and Sarah Adams all had two hits.
Meredith had 14 hits to Guilford’s 15. Kelsey Mabe went 3-4 with one run and a stolen base for the Angels.
The visitors captured game two, 9-0, in a run-rule game shortened to six innings. The Avenging Angels improved to 28-17 and winning pitcher Myah Morse moved to 10-6 after the win. She scattered five hits and fanned three Quakers.
Moreno went 2-3 to pace the GC offense. Jessica Beck recorded a double, the home team’s lone extra-base hit. Senior Haley Green (0-1) started and took the loss for the Quakers. She pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned).
Mabe and Rachel Peel each had two hits in the contest. Cecilia Coleman knocked her first home run of the year in the fourth inning for the visitors.
Between the games, seniors Green, Lackey and Kozan were recognized for their contributions to Guilford softball as part of Senior Day.
Guilford (17-20) closes the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season on Sunday. (4/22). The Quakers play at Randolph-Macon tomorrow. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
