GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Guilford College softball team swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Shenandoah University on Saturday. Game scores were 7-1 and 10-0 in a five-inning contest.
The Quakers–who snapped a five-game losing streak–improved to 15-15 and 4-9 in league action. The Hornets dropped to 11-18 and 2-9 in the ODAC.
In game one, Guilford busted open a 1-1 game with five runs in the fourth inning. Kayli Blankenship and Jordan Starke each had singles, which brought home two runners. Sabrina Moreno had a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Shannon Petsch for the other tally.
Sarah Aukamp went 3-4 and scored twice for GC. Teammate Savannah Yale knocked two doubles and Anna Wolfe went 2-4 with one double.
For SU, Maryann Hollen and Megan Wilk both hit a double.
Julie Gough (4-3) tossed a complete game and earned the win. She allowed five hits and one earned run. SU’s Katherine Seidl dropped to 6-9 after taking the loss. She gave up 10 hits and six runs.
In the nightcap, Courtney Lackey (7-6) earned the shutout but was one strike from recording a no-hitter. Lackey had two outs and two strikes on Autumn Beasley, but she singled through the left side. Allie Schey then singled to centerfield before Guilford recorded the final out.
Leading 2-0, the Quakers broke the game open with six runs in the third frame. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by Sarah Adams and a single by Katy Holt that scored two.
Makayla Carver, Darby Kozan and Makayla Crawford all had two hits in the game.
Kayla O’Connell (0-1) suffered the defeat for Shenandoah. She allowed six of GC’s 10 runs.
The Quakers host ODAC rival Eastern Mennonite on Monday. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
