College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 16, Averett 6

DANVILLE, Va. – Madison Iandoli scored four goals and an assist in Guilford College’s 16-6 women’s lacrosse win at Averett University in both teams’ season opener Tuesday. The game marked the first for Quakers’ interim head coach Charlotte Dixon and Averett’s first women’s lacrosse match since 2007.

Iandoli scored twice in the opening half, which helped the Quakers (1-0) to a 4-2 lead at intermission. Cat Thresher netted two of her three goals during Guilford’s 4-1 burst to start the second half and open an 8-3 advantage.

Shayla Johnson and Elizabeth Peasley both tallied twice as the Cougars reeled off four of the next six scores and pulled within 9-6 with just under 12 minutes left in regulation. A Carter McLeod free-position goal 62 seconds later triggered a 7-0 Guilford outburst to end the game. Iandoli scored twice in that time.

Seven different Quakers scored goals in the game, including McLeod and Thresher, who both netted three goals apiece. Guilford rookie Nia Gill had two goals and classmate Grace Moore notched two scores, a game-best three assists, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Guilford’s Taylor Campellone added a goal and a team-high six ground balls. The Quakers outshot Averett, 45-12, and won 16 of 24 draws. Sarah Sedaghat made saves in goal.

Johnson’s three goals paced Averett’s offense. Peasley scored twice and Brooke Smith contributed six ground balls and six caused turnovers, both game highs. Goalie Breanne Sawall made 20 saves and picked up five ground balls.
