Elon’s Powell Wins CAA WBB Rookie of the Week Award

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University women’s basketball freshman forward Jaylin Powell has been tabbed the CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday, Feb. 12, after her strong weekend in a pair of home wins for the Phoenix last week.

After playing 11 quality minutes off the bench in the 70-58 win over Drexel, Powell went off for a career high 15 points in Elon’s 97-44 victory over College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 11. She shot 5-of-6 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from long distance while also pulling down three rebounds and dishing out two assists in 18 minutes.

Powell’s honor is Elon’s third CAA Rookie of the Week award of the season. Saadia Munford took the first two of the campaign on Dec. 26 and Jan. 22. It is also the sixth weekly conference award of the season for the Phoenix with Malaya Johnson picking up two CAA Player of the Wee awards on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5 and Ra’Shika White earning the honor back on Nov. 13.

Nicole Enabosi of Delaware picked up the CAA’s Player of the Week award after back-to-back double-doubles against William & Mary and Hofstra.

With Elon on a five-game winning streak and having won seven of its last eight going back to Jan. 19, Elon will take its streak on the road Friday, Feb. 16, when it meets Hofstra at 7 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y. The Phoenix will then close the weekend with a 2 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 18, at Northeastern.
