College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 92, Bridgewater 86 (Photos Added)

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Alston Thompson (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) scored a game- and career-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Guilford College’s 92-86 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Bridgewater College Saturday.

Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford (Bridgewater)), who started his college career at Bridgewater, scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half to help the Quakers (3-3, 1-1 ODAC) erase a four-point halftime deficit.

The Eagles (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) made 18 three-pointers, 10 in the first half. A.J. Horde drained four of his six trifectas in the first half, including one 8:22 before the half that opened a 30-20 Eagles’ lead. Guilford answered with a 17-6 run to briefly hold the lead before a T.J. Turner trey gave the hosts a 41-37 edge at the break.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair that featured 11 ties and 17 lead changes. Guilford had a seven-point lead with 6:36 left in regulation, but Bridgewater rallied to tie. The Quakers answered and led 86-79, after a Jaylen Gore (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) three-pointer with 2:24 remaining.

Bridgewater didn’t fold and got back to within 89-86 with possession and 42 seconds remaining. Horde got off two more three-point shots, but neither fell and Thompson rebounded the second miss. He was quickly fouled and made two free throws to ice the win.

Behind Thompson and Curry, the Quakers enjoyed a 44-14 edge in interior scoring. Guilford also held a 45-33 rebounding advantage and had 15 offensive boards that led to 23 second-chance points, compared to 13 for the hosts. Guilford’s Carson Long added 14 points and Trever Hyatt scored a season-high 10 points off the bench. Gore finished with eight points, a career-high 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Horde’s 22 paced the Eagles, who had six double-figure scorers. Dimetri Chambers netted 14 points and shared team-high honors with six rebounds. Davrion Grier contributed 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. Turner scored 12 points on 4-for-4 three-point shooting.
