CAMDEN, S.C. – Sophomore Brendan MacDougall earned his third top-10 finish of the young season leading the High Point University men’s golf team at the Camden Collegiate Invitational on Sunday.

MacDougall carded a -1 (69) to finish the competitive event -2 (71-68-69, 208) and place in a tie for third. Overall, the Panthers finished in 11th place in the 17-team tournament besting three of the other four Big South teams in the event.

“Plain and simple, we were beat by more teams than we were able to beat and if you have a competitive bone in your body that isn’t fun,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “We had several opportunities to make a run up the leaderboard, but we didn’t capitalize. The great thing about golf is that you’re usually not as far away from where you want to be as you think. We just have to have a short memory and turn around quickly to be ready to compete next week.”

MacDougall opened the third round with seven straight pars before tallying birdies on 17 and 18 to make the turn -2. The Calgary, Alberta native overcame consecutive bogeys on five and six with a birdie on eight to finish with a 69 and clinch a spot in the top five.

“Brendan is really close to breaking through and getting his first collegiate win,” Gregor continued. “He’s getting better day in and day out and is staying patient and humble. But I would definitely keep an eye on his play the last two events of the fall.”

The Panthers shot their highest round of the event with a 302 on the final day to finish with a 54-hole total of 883. South Carolina won the tournament (837) while Presbyterian (871) was the only conference foe to finish ahead of HPU.

Behind MacDougall, sophomore Justin Lenzini posted a +6 (76) while sophomore RJ Barolotmucci fired a +7 (77) and freshman Ethan Willis shot an 80.

With a three-round total of 223 (67-74-82), sophomore Alec Weary was the second-highest Panther on the leaderboard at 46th. Playing as an individual, junior Davis Kiger rounded out his tournament with a 78 to tie for 54th (73-74-78, 225).

Meanwhile, Barolomucci tied for 66th, Lenzini tied for 77th and Willis finished up in a tie for 80th.

The Purple & White are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 29 through Tuesday, Oct. 31 in the East Bay Deli Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C.
