HAYESVILLE, N.C. — The High Point University women’s golf team finished in a tie for third place at the Bill Berg Invitational Tuesday (Oct. 17) at the Ridges Country Club (Par 62 – 6,057 yards) in Hayesville.

The Panthers closed the event with a final-round 308, same score as the second round, to finish at 927, level with Eastern Kentucky. Richmond won the team title at 910, while Winthrop was the runner-up with 924. Marshall (932) was fifth, while Wofford (933) was sixth and Presbyterian (934) was seventh.

“While it’s always a positive to move up a leaderboard, we really fell like we missed an opportunity to make a run at it today,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “A top-3 finish, though, is a great way to kick off this stretch of events. Next weekend’s courses really set up well for us as a team, so it’s only going to be to our benefit to have the quick turnaround. We have all the pieces to put a great tournament together so we’re excited to have two more chances at it very soon.”

Sophomore Samantha Vodry shot a 1-under 71, the Panthers’ first round under par this season, to finish 10th overall at 227. It is Vodry’s fourth par-or-better round of her career, which ranks fifth in school history. During the final round, Vodry fired an eagle on the par-5 14th, her first eagle of the season and third of her career, which is tied for second in school history.

Sophomore Tonrak Tasaso and freshman Anna Holmberg finished in a tie for 19th at 233 after final-round scores of 77 and 82, respectively. Senior Cayla Smith shot a 6-over 78 to place in a tie for 28th at 236, while sophomore Anna-Marie Kuenzle finished at 258 for the tournament.

The event marked the start of a 10-day stretch with three tournaments for the Panthers. HPU plays at the Winthrop Intercollegiate Oct. 21-22 and the Terrier Intercollegiate Oct. 23-24.
