Elon Men’s Golf Leads After Day One of Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. – William Harwood posted a flawless second round to lead the Elon University men’s golf team to a 10-stroke turnaround in the second round and a nine-stroke lead after the first day of competition at the annual Phoenix Invitational on Monday, Oct. 16, at Alamance Country Club.

“Our players were extremely excited to play at our home course and it took us a while to establish our rhythm,” said head coach Don Hill. “The way we ended our first round kick-started the momentum we carried into the afternoon. Our team had different individual performances carry us at different points during the first and second round. College golf is a team game and we need all of our guys to play at their best if we want to have a chance to win tomorrow.”

The Phoenix (284-274–558) used a massive 10-stroke turnaround in the second round, coming back from a seven-stroke deficit to take a nine stroke lead at 10-under par after the first day at Alamance Country Club. Harwood is currently in a tie for second individually and is two strokes off the lead heading into tomorrow’s final round. Radford and Gardner-Webb are each currently in a tie for second place in the team standings.

HIGHLIGHTS
After starting the tournament with an even-par round, Harwood put together a second round of golf, draining five birdies and making 13 pars to post a career-low round of 66 (-5), which was also tied for the lowest individual score in the second round. Harwood also made an eagle on the 17th hole during the first round to complete his all-round performance with seven birdies and an eagle.

Philip Loeb and Patrick Frodigh posted the second best scores by Elon golfers as they each posted a two-under par 140. Loeb made six birdies over the two rounds and is in a tie for seventh individually. Frodigh is also in a tie for posted his best round as a Phoenix with a four under-par 67 in the first round.

Additionally for the Phoenix, Charlie May tied career-low round of 69 in the second round, after making five birdies in the last 18 holes. Jake Leavitt bounced back from a three over-par 74 in the first to post a three-under 68 in the second.

NOTES
– Elon currently has five competitors (Harwood, Loeb, Frodigh, May, Leavitt) all in the top-20 among individuals.
– The Phoenix posted a 10-stroke turnaround in the second round to come back from a seven stroke deficit in the first round to secure a nine stroke lead heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Elon closes out the Phoenix Invitational with the final round on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C. Tee times will begin on the front and back nine holes starting at 8 a.m.
