History of the Event:
Four years ago, the city Greensboro lost a young and promising member of the community. Josh Level was a seventeen year old basketball star that passed away playing the game he loved. His passing hit home for many people as over 2000 people attended his memorial service. This gathering of the community; black and white; young and old; rich and poor, illustrated that he was known much more for his high character off the court than his high flying basketball endeavors on the court. His best friend, Kanayo Obi- Rapu Jr. made it a priority that just because Josh is physically gone, his name and legacy will never be forgotten.

For his senior project in 2014, Kanayo formulated an idea that has the basketball community rumbling every year. Kanayo founded the Josh Level Classic which is a charity basketball game that features the top high school basketball players in the state of North Carolina as well as the country. This year is no different as all 24 of our confirmed participants have either committed to a university or have a scholarship offer; 23 of the 24 players have Division one offers. We have gathered what we believe the best to be the best overall pool of talent in our event’s history with several nationally ranked players and future ACC players. Also we will have several current professional basketball players as well as college players in attendance as honorary guests and coaches. We want as many people as possible to come out and witness this gathering of talent and more importantly, honor and celebrate the life of Josh Level.

The proceeds of this game are given to the Level family who are in the closing stages of certifying the Josh Level Foundation as 501c3 organization. This foundation will divvy the money up to anti-bullying efforts and Kanayo’s ultimate goal of providing every amateur gymnasium to have automated external defibrillators (AEDs) which could have saved Josh’s life.
