Track and Field: HPU’s Holmes-DiGiovine Defends Big South Discus Title

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — The High Point University women’s track and field team picked up an individual title and a school record on the first day of the Big South Outdoor Championships Wednesday (May 10) in North Charleston, S.C.

After the first day, the Panthers sit in third place with 26 points. Liberty leads with 55 points, followed by Campbell (36), High Point, Charleston Southern (19) and Winthrop (11).

Junior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine won her second-consecutive discus title with a mark of 46.78m (153-6). Freshman Allison Torrance placed seventh with a throw of 38.65m (126-10).

Junior CeAnna Soper earned all-conference honors in the javelin, finishing third with a personal-record throw of 39.41m (129-3.75). Fellow junior Mackenzie Vermette finished sixth with a mark of 35.55m (116-7.75).

In the long jump, senior Amanda Gregory placed fifth with a PR of 5.64m (18-6).

Senior Erika Bridges sits in sixth place after four events of the heptathlon with 2,770 points, while Soper is eighth with 2,723 points.

In the 10,000 meters, freshman Kylie Hennessey crossed the line eighth in 39:25.40 to earn a point for the Panthers.

Freshman Kanajzae Brown won her prelim heat of the 200 meters and broke the High Point record in a time of 24.33 to advance to the final.

In another prelim, sophomore Emmy Geis qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.34, good enough for eighth.

The action continues Thursday (May 11) with combined events starting at 10:30 a.m., field events at 12:30 p.m. and track events in 4 p.m.

HPU Men Finish First Day at Big South Outdoors
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — The High Point University men’s track and field team finished first day action at the Big South Outdoor Championships Wednesday (May 10) in North Charleston, S.C.

Freshman Pablo Romero Gonzales leads the decathlon after five of 10 events with 3,712 points. Gonzales finished first in the 100 meters (11.10), the long jump (6.66m) and the 400 meters (49.41), all personal record. He also posted PRs in the shot put (10.46m) and high jump (1.98m). Sophomore Brad Kanney, competing in his first decathlon, is fifth with 2,706 points.

In the hammer throw, sophomore Britton Mann placed sixth with a PR of 42.56m (139-7.75).

Senior Chernet Sisay finished seventh in the 10,000 meters in 33:27.07.

In prelims, junior James House qualified for the finals of the 200 meters after placing sixth overall in 22.18.

After the first day of action, the Panthers sit in sixth place with five points. Liberty (28) leads Campbell (27) by a point, followed by Winthrop (25), Charleston Southern (15) and Gardner-Webb (13).
