Elon Baseball Phoenix Topped by Cougars in Game One

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Elon University baseball team found itself on the wrong side of an 11-2 score in its opener of a Colonial Athletic Association series at College of Charleston on Friday night.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

Elon (19-23, 9-7 CAA) had just four hits, including an RBI single from Ty Adcock.

For Charleston (21-21, 11-5 CAA), Erven Roper doubled twice, scored two runs and drove in one, while Xavier Freeman went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.

The loss went to Ryan Conroy (4-5) who was charged with six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

Bailey Ober (4-1) picked up the victory after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits.

How It Happened: After a couple of perfect innings, Charleston put the first runner on base thanks to a Phoenix error. After back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs, a ground ball to short erased one runner, but scored a run and left Cougar runners on the corners. Dupree Hart then made it a 2-0 game with a single through the left side of the infield that left runners on first and second. Elon escaped any more damage thanks to a double play to end the inning.

The Phoenix would tie it at two in the fourth. Joe Satterfield led off with a walk and headed to third on a Ryne Ogren single. Adcock’s one-out single got Elon on the board before Will Nance’s infield single loaded the bases. Hayden Platt’s deep fly ball to center was hauled in on the warning track and the sacrifice fly plated Ogren to tie the game.

Freeman’s one-out solo home run to left put the Cougars back on top in the last of the fifth. Charleston would add to its lead in the sixth. With runners on the corners and no outs, Roper lined a double down the left field line to make it a 4-2 contest. A one-out double from Joey Mundy added two more to the Cougar total.

Charleston added five insurance runs in the eighth inning.

On Deck: Game two of the series will be played Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Patriots Point.
