College Track and Field Results – Guilford Men Take Eighth, Women Ninth at ODAC Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – Guilford College’s Nate Phillips and Becca Benfield led the Quakers’ men’s and women’s track and field squads in Friday night’s opening action at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Track and Field Championships at Washington and Lee University. The men hold eighth place with four points while the women claim ninth place with three points.

Benfield broke her own shot put record by claiming a sixth-place finish with a mark of 10.75 meters, earning three points. The mark is .14 meters longer than her previous school record while holding all of Guilford’s top-eight all-time marks. Her mark was also just .13 meters outside of the top five.

Alise Green broke Guilford’s school record in the 200 meter dash, leading a pack of three Quakers with a 14th-place finish, finishing in 28.03 seconds. Green broke the school record by .38 seconds. A’lexus Newkirk (McLeansville, N.C./Eastern Guilford) finished behind Green, posting the second-fastest time in school history with a time of 28.22, beating the previous school record by .16 seconds. Cheyenne Wright finished behind Newkirk, posting a time of 28.92 seconds.

Green came within .03 seconds of qualifying for tomorrow’s 100 meter dash finals with a ninth-place finish, posting a time of 13.37 seconds. Her finish was also .03 seconds away from Guilford’s school record.

Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie) posted the third-fastest 400 meter dash time in school history, placing ninth with a time of 1:02.33. The time was just .45 seconds off the final qualifying time for tomorrow’s finals. Steller holds all of Guilford’s top-eight times in the 400 meter dash.

Phillips cracked the top five for the men, leading the Quakers in the long jump with a mark of 6.57 meters. The fifth-place mark earned the Quakers four points and stands seventh in school history. Jeremiah Hedrick (Sedalia, N.C./Southern Guilford) followed Phillips with a ninth-place finish, posting a mark of 6.26 meters.

Josephus Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J.Reynolds) led Guilford’s men’s sprinters with an 11th-place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.32 seconds. Mitchell was just .08 seconds away from the qualifying time for tomorrow’s finals. Mitchell also placed 15th in the 200 meter dash, posting a time of 23.34 seconds.

The ODAC Track and Field Championships continue tomorrow at Washington and Lee University as the Quakers are featured in the 800, 1,500, and 5,000 meter runs as well as relay events. Guilford is also featured in triple jump and discus.
