College Track and Field Results – Both Guilford Squads Place Ninth at ODAC Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. – Guilford College’s Jeremiah Hedrick (Sedalia, N.C./Southern Guilford) and Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) led Guilford’s men’s and women’s track and field squads with their best finishes as the Quakers wrapped up the final day of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Track and Field Championships at Washington and Lee University. The men placed ninth with 12 points while the women placed ninth with 13 points.

Fanney claimed sixth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.38, earning three points. Fanney’s 800 meter run time stands third in school history, claiming her third top-eight all-time finish. She also placed tenth in the 1,500 meter run, posting a time of 5:07.37. The time is good for third all-time in school history, posting her fourth top-eight all-time finish in the race.

Guilford’s 4×100 meter relay team of Cheynne Wright, A’lexus Newkirk (McLeansville, N.C./Eastern Guilford), Jamie McCreary (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), and Alise Green broke the school’s record in the event, posting a fifth-place finish with a time of 51.93 seconds, claiming four points. The time sets the new school record by .47 seconds.

Becca Benfield set a new school record in the discus throw with a 12th-place finish, posting a mark of 29.20 meters. The mark sets the new school standard by .75 meters and placed Benfield second in her flight.

Hedrick led the men with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump, posting a mark of 12.68 meters. The mark is good for seventh in school history and scored two points for the Quakers. Dwayne Duncan finished behind Hedrick and scored a point as he posted a mark of 19.18 meters.

The 4×100 meter relay team of Nate Phillips, Hedrick, Mahmoud Henderson, and Josephus Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) claimed fifth with a time of 44.18 seconds. The team earned four points with the finish and the time stands fifth in school history and is the first time inside Guilford’s top-eight all-time finishes in the event this season.
