Which football camp should I attend this summer?
from Coach Jimmy Lamour, with Lamour Training Systems

Someone said, “When the purpose of a thing is unknown abuse is inevitable.” The first thing to think about is why you are attending the camp you are going to. Are you looking for college exposure? Are you going to see how well you match up against top talent? Are you assessing your physical attributes? Are you relationship building with the coaches? When you can answer these questions it will make choosing a camp much easier.

The trainer in me teaches our athletes to avoid going to camps that are a week apart. The reason being you want to make sure you are well prepared and you receive the training effect of your hard work. I recommend going to 3 camps during the summer 3 to 4 weeks apart. The key I believe is picking camps on several levels as you want to keep your options open. The best way is to pick a camp at the D1 D1A, and D2 level if you believe that is appropriate for you. Some athletes also need to find a D3 school if that fits the type of athlete you are.

Also, consider going to camps that are not overcrowded with athletes. I cannot tell you how many camps with multiple coaches some past athletes have gone to that did well. But, the coaches did not even know they attended. It is hard to get noticed with a thousand athletes participating. Football as with anything in life is a relationship driven endeavor, so make sure you have been in conversation with the coaches prior to attending. Also, when you go to these types of crowded camps your position repetitions will be limited. You end up buying a $50 t-shirt as you were not noticed.

The camps to attend to find out where you are athletically are those that time electronically. This way you can ensure that everyone is measured the same. That is a much better assessment of what areas you need to improve as you receive experience. Also, remember that going to multiple camps and performing badly is just creating a resume for yourself that is favorable.

Lastly, there are camps that can help you develop a skill set that will teach you about the camp. These are the camps where instruction is what is most important. These camps are important as you do not want to present the same resume to the college coaches. There is a certain skill set that college coaches are looking for and those that communicate with college coaches know this. Every instructor is not for everyone, so find out about each camp to find what fits your needs the best. Hopefully, this article help shed some light on what you should look for. We are happy to talk to you if you have any questions.
