Elon Phoenix Heads to Duke for CAA Women’s Track & Field Tune-Up

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team concludes its outdoor regular season prior to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships with a short journey to the Duke Invitational. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin Friday, April 21, and concludes on Saturday, April 22, at the Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium.

Elon Preliminaries
• The Phoenix is scheduled to have 25 of its athletes in competition this weekend at the Duke Invitational. About 36 schools with at least one athlete registered is scheduled to be in competition at the meet.
• Among the notable schools this weekend includes Appalachian State, Campbell, Charlotte, Davidson, host Duke, East Carolina, High Point, Liberty, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and CAA foes UNCW and William & Mary.
• Junior Bryanna Hames earned her third CAA Field Athlete of the Week honor this season on Tuesday, April 18. The Charlotte, N.C., won broke her own school records in the outdoor shotput and discus last weekend at the Phoenix Invitational.
• Hames is one of two Phoenix athletes that holds the top marks on the current CAA performance list. Hames has the best marks in the shot put and discus throw while Kimberly Johansen has CAA best time in the 800 and 1,500-meters.
• Overall, Elon has 12 members of the program that hold marks or times that rank in the top-five of the CAA.
• Hames is also Elon’s highest ranked athlete in the top-50 of the NCAA East Region, sitting 16th in the discus throw.
• Three other athletes are also in the top-50 of the NCAA East Region in Johansen (800 and 1,500-meters), Carrie Abraham (triple jump) and Bre’anna Warren (discus).

Last Time Out Highlights
• Elon hosted its annual home meet, the Phoenix Invitational last Saturday, April 15, at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex.
• The Phoenix claimed 10 event titles at the meet and saw several of its performers set new personal or school-records.
• For the second time this season, Hames broke her school-record in the shot put with her toss of 47’ 11.25” (14.61m), winning the event. She followed with a victory in the discus with another school-record toss of 171’ 7” (52.29m).
• Warren was second to Hames in the shot put with her throw of 46’ 5.5” (14.16m) – a new personal-best for the Greensboro, N.C., native. Warren was also second in the discus with a throw of 163’ 6” (49.84m).
• Skylar Barthelmes won the javelin throw taking medalist honors after the rookie had the second-best throw in school history at 136’ 7” (41.64m).
• Elon also swept the podium in the 400-meters as Desiree Ross won medalist honors with her time of 57.09. Lauren Brzozowski was the runner-up with a season-best time of 57.38 while Katie Arbogast was third at 57.47.
• Emily Dixon took the title in the 100-meter hurdles as the Bath, England, native ran a time of 14.94. Junior Lydia Laws was third at 15.73 for the Phoenix. Laws did claim the title in the 400-meter hurdles after clocking a time of 1:03.16.
• Melody Burke won the high jump title as the rookie cleared the bar at 5′ 5″ (1.65m) and broke into the program’s top-five performance list. Dixon was second with her mark of 1.59m.
• In the long jump, Abraham took the victory as the senior finished with a leap of 5.67m. Burke was fourth in the event at 5.36m.
• Abraham also won the triple jump with her mark of 11.81m. Fellow senior Jayna Coyle was second with her mark of 11.59m.

Elon heads to Delaware for the CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set to be held on May 5-6, at the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
