College Softball Finals – Guilford 5–14, Eastern Mennonite 1–5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Sabrina Moreno hit five-for-eight with five RBI over Sunday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite University as the Quakers posted a sweep of the Royals. The Quakers claimed game one, 5-1, and won the nightcap in five innings, 14-5.

After Guilford (19-6, 4-2 ODAC) starting pitcher Courtney Lackey sat Eastern Mennonite down quickly in the bottom of the first inning, Caroline Barnette connected on a solo home run to left field to lead off the top of the second stanza. Guilford created all of their distance from the Royals in the top of the fifth frame with a two-out rally. Four straight two-out singles posted four runs in the inning. Barnette capped the rally with a two-RBI single, the fourth hit in the streak, as the Quakers held a five-run lead.

Beck Hoskins broke Guilford’s shutout on the last play of the game. Hoskins singled to left-center field to out the Royals (13-5, 1-5 ODAC) on the board. Mariann Smith rounded third and attempted to stretch a second run, but Makayla Carver threw Smith out from left field to end the game.

Moreno collected three RBI in her first two at-bats of game two as she connected on a two-run home run with no outs in the top of the first inning to power a three-run rally. Moreno also connected on a RBI-single up the middle in her next at-bat with two outs. The Quakers stormed to a 12-1 lead after the top of the third inning where Guilford posted a six-run rally. Guilford posted three runs with no outs as Taylor Boyd opened the rally with a RBI-double to left-center field. The second half of Guilford’s rally came with two outs as Shelby Helms connected on a RBI-single, which led her to second base on the throw.

The Royals answered in the bottom half of the inning as Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice that drove the Royals’ second run of the inning home.

The Quakers continued to pour on the Royals in the next inning as Moreno added her third hit of the contest to cap a three-run rally with a RBI-single after Carver posted a two-RBI double with one out.

Alexa Sheets produced a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning in an effort to elongate the game with the Royals down nine. The Quakers induced a pop fly to Hoskins in the next at-bat to end the contest in five innings.

Carver also hit five-for-eight over the afternoon to join Moreno, posting three RBI with one double. Barnette finished game one two-for-three with three RBI as she finished the afternoon three total hits. Boyd finished three-for-four in game two while Makayla Crawford hit three-for-three to join Carver and Moreno as the four Quakers with three hits in the nightcap.

Sheets (1-2) finished the afternoon three-for-eight with two RBI to lead Eastern Mennonite. She also claimed the game two loss in a two-inning effort. Sydney Reath claimed the game one loss for the Royals in a three-inning start.

Lackey (9-3) collected her second consecutive complete-game victory in as many days, striking out six and walking one. Rebekah Langston (3-0) claimed the game two win in relief of Danielle Hunt in a two and one-third innings effort where she fanned one and walked three.

The Quakers return home Wednesday for their first home contest since February 25th, hosting Roanoke College for a 3 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
