PHILADELPHIA—The High Point University women’s lacrosse team closed out non-conference play by picking up its sixth-consecutive win, holding off Drexel, 11-10, Sunday afternoon (March 26) at Vidas Field in Philadelphia.

The Panthers (6-3) held a sizable advantage in draw controls, 14-9, and shots, 36-28. The Dragons (4-4) tallied more ground balls, 24-18, and saves, 13-8.

“I’m really happy with the composure we played with today,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “The first half was a great showcase of what this team is capable of. Our level dropped off a bit in the second half, but we were able to show our character and find a way to win draws and create offensive opportunities at just the right times.

“Our leadership is unbelievable right now, I’m really happy for this team. We are looking forward to staying closer to home and getting conference play started next week.”

Drexel used three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead with 21:48 to go in the first half, but the Panthers then held the Dragons scoreless for the next 25 minutes, building a 6-3 lead.

In the second half, High Point built a 10-5 lead, but four-straight Drexel scores closed the gap to 10-9 with 4:36 left. Junior Darla Poulin’s second goal of the game a minute later extended the Purple & White’s lead to two. Drexel scored with 2:20 remaining and had a couple possessions in the final two minutes, but the Panthers were able to leave town with the win.

Junior Brooke Stevens had a career-high five goals, while senior Samantha Brown recorded six poings (3g, 3a) and has posted at least three points in six-consecutive contests.

Freshman Jill Rall made eight saves, including six in the second half to improve to 5-0 on the season in the cage.

With three assists, Brown now has 44 for her High Point career and moved into fifth all-time in program history, passing Sara Kuhlman (2011-14).

Next up, the Panthers open up Big South Conference play at Gardner-Webb on Saturday (April 1). First draw in Boiling Springs, N.C., is set for 1 p.m.
