WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After a delay due to morning snow, the High Point University men’s golf team shot a 309 in the opening round of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary on Sunday.

In a lineup made up of all underclassmen, freshman Alec Weary led the way with +5 (75) outings on the par-70 Kingsmill River Course.

“We shot our worst score to par of the year,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “We’re disappointed, but we don’t have time to dwell on it. It’s time to reset and hopefully make a move tomorrow.”

Overall, Weary is tied for 35th and one stroke ahead of fellow freshman RJ Bartolomucci. Bartolomucci posted four birdies on the day – the most by a Panther – and is tied for 53rd in the field after carding a +6 (76).

In the 22-team field, the Purple & White are 16th at +29 (309) but are just six strokes from the top-10 entering the second round on Monday.

Rounding out the squad’s counters, sophomore Davis Kiger fired a +8 (78) while freshman Brendan MacDougall carded a +10 (80). Making his second appearance of the spring, freshman Justin Lenzini finished the first round in 89 strokes (+19).

HPU will be back out on the course at 1:45 p.m. on Monday before wrapping up the tournament on Tuesday in a shotgun start.
