Elon Men’s Golf: Harwood Wins Title, Phoenix Ties for Second at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. – Freshman William Harwood claimed his first-career individual title and four total Phoenix players earned a top-25 individual finish as the Elon University men’s golf team earned a tie for second-place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Saturday, March 11, at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 8 course.

FINAL RESULTS

Harwood clinched his first individual title posting a final round of 71 (E), which included five birdies, and carding a final 54-hole score of 3-over par (73-72-71–216) for the tournament. He finished a stroke better than Timothy Wiseman of Ball State for the championship.

Elon (296-299-298–889) finished in a tie for second with Old Dominion and finished seven strokes behind tournament-champion Ball State. The Phoenix earned a top-three team finish for the fourth consecutive tournament dating back to the Phoenix Invitational in October. It’s also second consecutive year that maroon and gold has earned a runner-up finish at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.

“I’m very proud of how we fought through some tough conditions this week,” said head coach Don Hill. We had to make adjustments to the schedule based on cold weather and playing in extremely windy conditions on Friday. Anyone who has experienced Pinehurst understands that there are a lot of runoffs around the greens and you have to be very exact in your yardages, and for the most part we did that. I’m very proud of the way the guys competed. They never gave up and we have now finished in the top-three in four straight events.”

The Highlights
Harwood had an impressive final round sinking five birdies, which included four on the front nine, to card an even-par 71 on Saturday. The freshman is Elon’s second individual champion this season. Jake Leavitt earned a share of the individual title at the Phoenix Invitational.

“I’m certainly proud of William Harwood on earning his first-ever tournament title,” Hill said. “William has been working extremely hard. He was disappointed with his final round at the Loyola Intercollegiate. He came back, we challenged him in some difference scenarios, and he responded as you would expect.”

For the fourth consecutive event, the Phoenix had four players earn a top-25 finish. In addition to Harwood, Philip Loeb, Jake Leavitt and Jared Mactas all placed in the top-25.

Loeb finished tied for 15th individually shooting 12-over par (75-75-75–225) 54-hole score. Leavitt placed in a tie for 23rd and Mactas finished tied for 25th individually.

Charlie May’s highlight of the tournament came in the final round when he drained his first-career hole-in-one on the par-three fifth hole. May moved up five spots in the final round and finished tied for 32nd as an individual.

Up Next
The Phoenix returns to the links, Oct. 18-19, at the Mission Inn Spectacular at Howey In The Hills Resort in Florida. The tournament will be hosted by George Mason University.
