College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Christopher Newport 15, Guilford 2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Drew Magnusson and Randy Foster scored three goals apiece in Christopher Newport University’s 15-2 lacrosse win over visiting Guilford College Saturday. The Captains (3-2) scored the game’s first 13 goals and outshot their guests, 54-14, in their third win of the season.

Christopher Newport clustered its scoring for most of the game. Magnusson and Ryan Mills scored 70 second apart early in the first quarter to spot CNU an early 2-0 lead. Magnusson and Will Geise tallied 74 seconds apart towards the end of the quarter, doubling the Captains lead after 15 minutes.

Foster scored his first goal in the second quarter, which gave Christopher Newport a 6-0 halftime advantage. The Captains successfully killed off three man-down situations and got three saves from goalie Matt Hayden in the quarter.

Shane McKenna scored 1:15 into the second half and Magnusson followed 31 seconds later, which opened an 8-0 margin. Foster added two more goals and Mills one in the Captains’ seven-score third quarter.

Zack Capwell and Derek Spaulding put Guilford on the board midway through the fourth quarter.

Ten different Captains scored, including Will Geise, who also added two assists. McKenna had two goals and an assist. Face-off specialist Nick Kirschke captured seven-of-11 draws and picked up five ground balls for the home team. Tony Cruz won six-of-seven face-offs as Christopher Newport won 15 of 20 draws and picked up 38 of the game’s 57 ground balls.

Parker Styles went the distance in goal for the Quakers and made 20 saves. He also picked up four ground balls to share team-high honors with David Felipe. Matt Bowen contributed two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers (2-2) host Ohio Northern University Tuesday (3/7) at 4:00 p.m.
