HPU Women’s Golf Qualifies for Championship Round at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.—The High Point University women’s golf team finished second-round action at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in 21st place Monday (Feb. 27) at the Osprey Point Golf Club (Par 72 – 5,964 yards) in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The Panthers shot 309 in the second round for a two-day total of 617 and sit in 21st place of 43 teams. The top-22 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round Tuesday.

“Today was a hard-fought battle,” HPU head coach Alexis Bennett said. “We could not get the birdies to fall. I’m very proud of the way we hung in there and kept our heads up, but we’re going to need to either find a fourth score or shave a few strokes in other places if we want to make a significant move on this leaderboard.

“We have proven we have the potential to go low in us, we just need to put it all together.”

Junior Cayla Smith continues to lead the Panthers at 5-over for the tourney after shooting 75 on Monday and is currently tied for 29th in the individual standings. Smith was joined by freshmen Tonrak Tasaso and Samantha Vodry in shooting 75 in the second round. Tasaso is tied for 36th at 6-over for the tournament, while Vodry is at 12-over.

Senior Daniell Fuss and sophomore Devi Meyers each shot 12-over 84 in the second round.

The third and final round will commence Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
