Elon Baseball Drops Game Two at #12 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 12th-ranked Clemson University baseball team scored in seven of eight innings as the Tigers handed the Elon Phoenix a 13-5 defeat in game two of a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Elon (3-3) got two hits apiece from Zach Evers and Kyle Jackson, while Will Nance hit his first home run of the season.

Clemson (4-2) saw both Andrew Cox and Logan Davidson record two hits and drive in three.

A week after throwing a no-hitter, Elon’s Robbie Welhaf (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Welhaf gave up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 2.2 innings.

The win went to All-American Pat Krall (2-0) who was charged with five runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of action.

How It Happened: Clemson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk before Weston Jackson plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to center. After a single from Andrew Cox made it 2-0, Logan Davidson drove in a pair with a single to right.

Elon got one back in the top of the second when Hayden Platt scored Cam Devanney with a sacrifice fly to center. The Tigers answered with a pair of runs in the last of the second to build a 6-1 advantage.

The maroon and gold inched closer in the third as Ryne Ogren scored from second on a Jackson ripped a double inside the third base bag only to see Clemson plate another pair in the bottom of the inning.

With Clemson up 9-2 in the fifth, Nance ripped a line drive that cleared the wall in left for a three-run homer.

Notes: Elon has scored five or more runs in five of its six games this season… All nine Phoenix starters had at least one hit.
