SALEM, Va. – Senior Amy Steller (Advance, N.C./Davie County (Pfeiffer)) scored a game-high 21 points in Guilford College’s 72-55 victory over Washington and Lee University Friday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinals. Steller, who scored 17 in the second half, shot five-of-six from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line to match her career scoring high.
Guilford’s Anais Weatherly (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) added her team-leading 10th double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) and five steals to send Guilford (22-3) into Saturday’s (2/24) 8:00 p.m. ODAC Tournament semifinal contest against the winner of Friday’s game between Shenandoah University and Emory & Henry College. The Quakers have reached the semifinals 17 times in 26 tournament appearances.
The Quakers used a big second quarter to break open a one-point game after the first 10 minutes. Weatherly scored eight of her 15 points in the frame as Guilford outscored the Generals, 19-9. As they did for most of the game, the Quakers pushed the tempo and got the ball inside, which resulted in a 20-6 edge in interior scoring after 20 minutes. For the game, Guilford outscored the Generals inside, 42-20.
The second half featured more of the same as Guilford grew its 31-20 halftime lead to 17 points. Steller scored six quick points in the third quarter and the Generals struggled to score. Washington and Lee missed 11 of its first 12 three-pointers before Andrea Ferrero’s trifecta before the third-quarter horn. Her second three of the game made the score, 54-34. Guilford forced eight third-quarter turnovers and 17 for the game, leading to 12 Quakers’ points.
Guilford senior Heaven Walters (Elkin, N.C./Starmount) scored eight points in the first quarter on the way to 10 points and seven rebounds. Teammate Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) totaled six points, a season-best nine boards and two assists.
Emily Perszyk scored a team-high 19 points and had five rebounds for the seventh-seeded Generals (12-14). Ferrero finished with 13 points, seven boards and two blocks off the bench.
Guilford is seeded second in the ODAC Tournament field and ranked third in this week’s NCAA Division III South Rankings.
