College Baseball Final – Guilford 8, Ferrum 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Joe Metts went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI as Guilford College defeated Ferrum College, 8-4, Wednesday afternoon at McBane Field.

The win marked the 200th career coaching triumph for Quakers’ mentor Nick Black ’02. Now in his 12th season as Guilford’s head coach, he ranks second only to Stuart Maynard ’42 among Guilford baseball coaching wins leaders (200-235-1).

The Quakers, who recorded their fifth straight win, improved to 7-2. The Panthers dropped to 1-4.

The home team got back-to-back doubles by Joe Denton and Metts in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Quakers later sent 10 men to the plate and tallied six runs in the third inning.

Guilford recorded 15 hits to Ferrum’s 10. Denton, Mitchell Stumpo, Sammy Gerald and Michael Pinskton all had two hits in the game. For Ferrum, Kyle Alstice, Lane Deaver, Christian Sowers and Jacob Holland had two hits apiece.

The Quakers used eight pitchers. Designated starter Ty Walser (1-0) pitched the first inning and was credited with the win. Brody Holloman allowed three unearned runs in the fourth frame. Stewart Laws–who tossed the sixth and seventh innings–was the lone Quaker to pitch more than one inning.

Ferrum scored its lone earned run in the top of the ninth. Tim Ortega singled home Holland, who led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch by Ryan Hill, for the contest’s final run.

Brandon Turner (0-1) took the defeat for the Panthers. He pitched the first two innings.

Guilford plays crosstown-rival Greensboro College Friday (2/23). First pitch is 4 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park.
