Guilford Earns #2 Seed in ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Field

Four Ties Dot Final Standings

FOREST, Va. — For the second consecutive year, the conference’s tiebreaking procedures got a hefty workout in determining the ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament pairings, with four deadlocks dotting the standings. Lynchburg College was involved in one such scenario, coming out on top in a comparison with Guilford College to secure the top seed in next week’s conference postseason event.

Head-to-head results could not separate the Hornets from the Quakers for the top seed, but the second step involving points assignments for wins in league play did the trick and provided Lynchburg with the tourney’s top billing for a second straight year. Guilford, as the second seed, joins LC and two other squads in earning byes thru the first round into quarterfinal play at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va.

Those two remaining squads are Emory & Henry College and Eastern Mennonite University. The Wasps defeated the Royals twice in the regular season, which proved the difference-maker in assigning the three-seed to E&H and slotted EMU fourth.

The conference’s second tiebreaking step was again put into action to determine the fifth and sixth seeds. Randolph-Macon College edged Virginia Wesleyan College in the points breakdown, positioning RMC and VWC fifth and sixth, sequentially. They’ll be joined by Washington and Lee University and Randolph College in hosting first round games on their respective campuses on Tuesday evening. W&L earned the seven seed after winning a three-way head-to-head tiebreaker with Randolph and Bridgewater College. The Wildcats are seeded eighth, with the Eagles set to make a first-round trip to Randolph as the nine seed.

The remaining three positions in the 12-team tournament field were handled directly by the final standings. Roanoke College will play as the 10th seed and travel to Washington and Lee in the first round. Eleventh-seeded Shenandoah University heads to the beach to face VWC in opening action, and #12 Hollins University makes the trip to Randolph-Macon to complete the early round slate.

Tournament action begins on Tuesday, February 21, with four first round contests at the previously mentioned 5-8 seeds. The winners of those four games will join the top four seeds in Salem at the Salem Civic Center for the quarterfinals on Friday, February 24. Semifinals will be on Saturday, February 25, followed by the championship game on Sunday, February 26.
