College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Sewanee 10, Guilford 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of the South (Sewanee) scored four man-up goals in seven chances and held Guilford College to one second-half tally in Saturday’s 10-6 men’s lacrosse victory Saturday. Hayden Hunt scored two goals and an assist for the Tigers (1-1), who scored six of the game’s final seven goals.

The Quakers (0-1) held their fourth lead of the game midway through the second quarter when Zach Berkowitz netted his third and final goal of the game. The even-strength tally assisted by Brennan Sweeney gave Guilford a 5-4 lead 8:40 before the half.

Sewanee evened the score for the fifth and final time thanks to an own goal by the Quakers. A Guilford defender errantly flipped the ball into his own goal while trying to clear the crease. Hunt scored his second man-up goal of the half 50 seconds later to send the guests into intermission with a 6-5 lead.

Tyler Calnan’s unassisted goal 4:31 into the third quarter opened the second-half scoring and extended Sewanee’s scoring run that ultimately totaled five goals. Peter Brown scored with a man advantage and Cameron Acuff netted his first college score to open a 9-5 Sewanee edge after three quarters. The Tigers killed off all four of the Quakers’ extra-man chances in the frame, including a two-man disadvantage late in the quarter.

Derek Spaulding scored in transition off a David Felipe assist to finally stop Sewanee’s streak and get Guilford to within 9-6 early in the fourth quarter. Hunt set up Pat DiMento’s first goal of the year two minutes later, which ultimately ended the game’s scoring.

Nine different Tigers tallied on the afternoon, including Thomas Lynde, who also had two assists. Selby Austin had a solid game in goal with eight saves, a game-high six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ryan Stubits won six-of-eight face-offs, which helped the Tigers to an 11-8 edge in draws.

Berkowitz’s three goals paced Guilford’s offense. Spaulding, Nick Damiano and Aswan Bland also dent the twine for Guilford. Parker Styles had eight saves in goal and also picked up a club-best four ground balls.
