BLACKSBURG, Va. – In one of the final meets of the indoor regular season, the Elon women’s track and field team had a number of solid performances on the first day of the Virginia Tech Challenge on Friday evening, Feb. 17, inside the Rector Field House.
The Phoenix’s 4×800-meter relay team Corey Weiss, Sophia Tasselmyer, Brigid Brennan and Melissa Anastasakis qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships after winning the race with a time of 9:19.02. The quartet edged out VMI for the event title by over three seconds.
Chelsea Smith set a new personal-record in the 800-meters with her time of 2:14.86 in the race, just missing on qualifying for the ECACs. The Toms River, N.J., native won the event with teammate Molly Offstein coming in at fourth with a time of 2:19.98, a new collegiate best. Lauren Brzozowski clocked a time of 25.16 in the 200-meters to finish third overall. That performance is now the third-fastest performance in school history.
In the women’s unseeded pole vault, Ellie Bennett took medalist honors with her cleared height of 10’ 11.75” (3.35m). Teammate Nicole Karabas tied Bennett with the same cleared height, but needed more attempts to do so. Carrie Abraham was seventh in the long jump with a mark of 17’ 11” (5.46m).
Elon is back to wrap up the final day of the of the meet tomorrow, Feb. 18, with events starting at 11 a.m.
