ROCK HILL, S.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team rode the hot shooting of sophomore Emma Bockrath to a 70-57 victory over Winthrop in the Winthrop Coliseum on Tuesday night.
Bockrath drilled a career-high six three-pointers on 10 attempts to record her season straight 20-point outing for the Panthers (9-13, 7-4). The victory gives the Purple & White a four-game winning streak – the team’s longest since the end of the 2014-15 season.
“I don’t know if we came out in the first quarter sure of anything, so in between the first and second quarters we just talked about being more confident against their zone,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “The rest of the game we just took the shots we take every day and made enough of them to get the win. Emma’s play throughout the game was huge and she’s a kid that just wants to get a win and she really got it done for us tonight.”
Along with her season-high 24 points, Bockrath tallied seven rebounds and four assists. Similarly, freshman Camryn Brown stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, four assists, two rebounds and a steal on the night.
From her guard spot, senior Kaylah Keys tallied 10 points and three assists. The assists made her the third player in Big South history to record 300 assists, 200 three-pointers and 150 steals. She also moved past Sharon Wilkerson (Liberty ’00) for 12th on the league’s career scoring list.
Despite not scoring, redshirt-sophomore Kennedy Currie had a productive evening grabbing a team-high nine rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes. Likewise, sophomores Haleigh Hatfield and Lindsey Edwards claimed six boards apiece as HPU recorded a +7 margin on the glass (51-44).
On the night, the Panthers were credited with 17 assists on 26-of-74 shooting (35.1 percent) while Winthrop hit 21-of-62 (33.9 percent).
In the loss, Erica Williams finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Eagles (2-21, 1-10). Meanwhile, the win moves HPU to within one game of first-place where Liberty, Radford and Campbell are tied at 8-3 in league play.
Bockrath ignited the HPU offense after a slow start drilling two three-pointers and two free throws in the first quarter as the Panthers built a 14-8 advantage. However, the Eagles quickly erased the deficit pulling even at 16-all with four minutes gone in the second period.
But Bockrath had the answer canning another trifecta as HPU regained a 19-16 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. That three sparked a 17-3 run as the Purple & White’s advantage swelled to 14, 33-19, at the 2:21 mark. Winthrop, though, scored nine of the last 14 points to enter halftime trailing by 10, 38-28.
After the break, the Eagles extended their run to 17-7 run to claw back to within four, 40-36, with 5:38 left in the third frame. However, the Panthers combined four transition baskets with two more three’s from Bockrath over the final 15 minutes as they closed out the 70-57 victory.
High Point is back on the road on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they head to Boiling Springs, N.C. to take on the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs.
