Elon Women’s Tennis Travels to Face Furman Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team returns to action to face Furman on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

FURMAN LIVE SCORING

LAST TIME OUT
Elon improved its record to 4-2 with a 7-0 sweep of Meredith College on Jan. 25 in the second match of a doubleheader. The Phoenix cruised to victory by losing only two games in the match.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday’s match will be Elon’s 17th meeting against Furman, a former Phoenix opponent in the Southern Conference. Elon has won three of those matches, most recently defeating the Paladins 4-3 in the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament.

NEWCOMERS
Elon welcomes a pair of freshmen – Alex Koniaev and Sofia Edo – to the team in 2017. Koniaev joined the team this past fall and Edo was a late addition in January. Knoiaev was rated a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network and achieved her career-high national ranking of No. 73 in 2016. Edo comes from Argentina, where she won eight national tournaments at the junior level.

EARLY SUCCESS
Sofia Edo has won each of her first three singles matches to start her college career and enters Saturday’s match with a singles record of 3-0. Overall, the Phoenix is 24-12 dual-match singles action and 12-4 in doubles play.

HEAD COACH ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Elizabeth Anderson is entering her 13th season as head coach of the Phoenix. Anderson earned her first-ever year accolade, after she was named the 2016 CAA Coach of the Year. She has led Elon to five straight seasons of 14 or more wins and guided the program to its first NCAA Tournament in 2014.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Furman (3-2) is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Troy and Brenau last weekend. Earlier this season, the Paladins recorded a win against Coastal Carolina and lost to South Carolina and Winthrop.

UP NEXT
After traveling to face Furman, the Phoenix returns to Elon for a three-match homestand that begins with a match against Towson on Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
