DURHAM, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team split its doubleheader with a loss to No. 10 Duke and a victory over Meredith College on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University.

Natalia Janowicz had a strong performance for the Phoenix finishing 2-2 overall during the doubleheader. Although she dropped both of her matches against Duke, she battled in her singles match to force a second-set tiebreak. She bounced back to pick up a win in both singles and doubles against the Avenging Angels.
In addition, Sofia Edo remained undefeated in singles play to start her career picking up her third win of the season at the No. 6 position against Meredith.
“Our team competed very well today,” said head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “It was great to get two matches in and to have everyone contribute. We look forward to getting back to work in practice and preparing for our next match against a strong Furman team.”
HIGHLIGHTS
In the first match of the day, Duke (1-0) took the doubles point and the early 1-0 advantage. After the Blue Devils earned a 6-1 win on court one, Alyssa Smith and Chalena Scholl clinched the point with a 6-2 victory on the second court. Kirsten Ward and Suzanne Zenoni put in a good performance, but their match went unfinished at No. 3 with the Blue Devils holding a slim 4-3 lead when the doubles point was clinched.
Following victories on courts three and two, ITA No. 76-ranked Kaitlyn McCarthy clinched the victory for Duke with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against Olivia Lucas. Natalia Janowicz fought hard in her match at No. 6, but fell in a second-set tiebreaker, falling to Rebecca Smaller by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Against Meredith College (0-1) in the second match, the Phoenix only dropped two games in singles and doubles action combined and cruised to a 7-0-shutout victory. Lucas and Erica Braschi clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 victory. Lucas would go on to clinch the victory in singles action with a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 3 singles.
