Romero Gonzalez leads HPU men’s track & field at Liberty Combined Events

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman Pablo Romero Gonzalez placed third in the heptathlon to lead the High Point University men’s track & field team at the Liberty Combined Event in Lynchburg, Va., on Friday and Saturday.

“We were very pleased with how Pablo Romero Gonzalez performed in his first collegiate heptathlon and Britton Mann continues to make great strides in the shot put,” head coach Mike Esposito said. “We just need to just keep getting fitter and keep grinding. We have a great staff and a great group of kids and need to stick to the plan.”

Romero Gonzalez finished the heptathlon with 4749 points. He tied for fist in the high jump with a height of 1.97m (6-5.5) and also finished fifth in the both the 1000m and the 60m hurdles.

In the field events, sophomore Britton Mann finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 14.99m (49-2.25) and freshman Jordan McClung tied for eighth in the pole vault, clearing 4.40m (14-5.25).

Sophomore Patrick Van Der Cruyssen turned in the best performance for HPU on the track, finishing in ninth-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:58.93 while freshman TJ Morales also earned a top-10 finish, placing 10th in the 3000m with a time of 9:13.55.

The Panthers are back in Lynchburg, Va., for the Darius Dixon Memorial. The two-day event will begin on Friday, Jan. 27.
