Records Set for Elon Track and Field at Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Highlighted by new school records in the distance medley relay, the Elon University women’s track and field team had a strong outing at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21, inside the JDL Fast Track Complex.

RESULTS

Racing in its first DMR as a team in nearly three years, the Phoenix saw a pair of groups set new school records in the event. The Elon “B” team of Brigid Brennan, Lydia Laws, Chelsea Smith and Shelby Cuddeback clocked a 12:07.82 in the 4,000-meter DMR, breaking the previous school-record by nearly 15 seconds and also qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships. The maroon and gold “A” DMR team of Melissa Anastasakis, Katie Arbogast, Molly Offstein and Coralea Geraniotis ran the second-fastest time in program history with its 12:09.84 and was the runner-up overall.

Elon also won the 4×400-meter relay by edging Georgia Southern. The Phoenix quartet of Desiree Ross, Arbogast, Laws and Lauren Brzozowski clocked a time of 3:56.49.

In the shot put, Bre’anna Warren was the runner-up in the event after setting a new personal-record with a toss of 45’ 11.25” (14.00m) and becomes only the second athlete in school history to reach the 14-meter mark in the indoor shot put (Charlise Morgan – school-record 14.78m in 2014). Bryanna Hames also finished in the top-five in fourth with her new personal-best heave of 45’ 4.25” (13.82m) while freshman Skylar Barthelmes had a new collegiate-best throw of 40’ 4.25” (12.30m).

Ross was the runner-up in the 400-meters with her time of 58.48 while Brzozowski was fourth after clocking a 59.26. Ellie Bennett set a new personal-best in the indoor pole vault after clearing the bar at 11’ 3.75” (3.45m) and finishing fifth overall.

Carrie Abraham was Elon’s top finisher in both the long and triple jump. Abraham was seventh in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 2” (5.23m) and was fourth in the triple jump at 37’ 5” (11.40m). Rookie Melody Burke was seventh in the triple jump at 36’ 10.50” (11.24m) while senior Jayna Coyle was eighth at 36’ 1.50” (11.01m).

Sophia Tasselmyer was fourth overall in the one-mile run with a time of 5:07.98. Brzozowski was Elon’s top finisher in the 200-meters with a 25.93 – good for ninth overall.

The Phoenix will be back in action next weekend, Jan. 27-28, with a trip to Liberty University for the Darius Dixon Invitational.
