• High Point outscored Campbell by 11 in the second half to rally for an 83-78 win at Gore Arena on Thursday.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Five players finished in double figures in the High Point University men’s basketball team’s 83-78 comeback win over Campbell on Thursday night in Buies Creek, N.C. The 83 points scored by the Panthers was a season high for HPU.
“This was a great road win,” head coach Scott Cherry said. “I’m really proud of the group for the way they fought and battled and made big plays on both ends of the floor. It came down to just outscoring them and we got to the free throw line a lot more than they did in the second half. The whole team did a great job of being resilient and gutting out a great road win and that’s what it comes down to.”
Senior Anthony Lindauer and sophomore Andre Fox both scored 16 to lead a balanced HPU attack. Lindauer went 3-4 from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line while Fox went 6-14 overall and 4-5 from behind the arc.
Senior Tarique Thompson scored 14 off the bench and both redshirt-senior Miles Bowman Jr., and junior Ricky Madison had 10 points in the contest. Bowman Jr. also grabbed a team-high 13 boards for his eighth double-double of the season.
The Panthers outrebounded Campbell on the night, 35-20, and had 15 offensive boards that led to 24 second-chance points. The Purple & White had 21 second-half boards compared to just seven for Campbell and 17 second-chance points.
Big South leading scorer Chris Clemons led all scorers with 29 points for Campbell on 9-19 shooting, including a 3-10 mark from behind the arc. Shane Whitfield finished with 14 and Kyrie’ Hammer had 13 to join Clemons in double figures.
High Point trailed by eight, 49-41, when Lindauer and Thompson combined to score 12 straight, propelling the Panthers to a 53-49 lead. Lindauer bookended the run with two 3-pointers while Thompson hit two free throws and two layups for HPU.
The Purple & White led by six, 60-54, with 10 minutes to play when the hosts ran off seven-straight points to go back into the lead at 61-60, but High Point came right back with two free throws by Lindauer and a layup by Madison to retake the lead.
Campbell managed to tie the game at 66-66 on a three by Marcus Burk but freshman Jamal Wright answered on the other end with a three of his own to give HPU a lead that it would not relinquish the rest of the way.
High Point went 6-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold off the Camels as Bowman Jr., Lindauer and junior Austin White all went 2-2 in the final minute. The Panthers finished 21-22 from the charity stripe for the game. It was HPU’s best free throw shooting performance since the team went 16-16 against Campbell on Feb. 14, 2015.
The win is High Point’s second of the season on the road and it improves the Purple & White’s record to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the Big South. Campbell drops to 10-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Both teams started the games with hot hands and the Panthers led by one, 8-7, after four minutes thanks to five-straight points on a 3-pointer by Fox and a layup by Wright.
After Campbell used a 13-4 run to take an eight-point lead with a little over 11 minutes left in the half, White scored five-straight points with an old-fashioned three-point play and a jumper to pull the Panthers back with one possession at 20-17.
A 3-pointer by Hammer put Campbell back up eight with just 1:42 to play, but Bowman Jr., sank two free throws on the Panthers’ final possession of the half to send HPU into the break down six, 41-35.
High Point heads to Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 21, to take on the Radford Highlanders. Tip is set for noon and the game will be broadcast on the American Sports Network.
