You have to think the 6’4/205lb. football and basketball player Sage Surratt, at Lincolnton High School, will on the list for the future, after what he has done and is still doing on high school level this season(2016-2017)…And how about Hendon Hooker(Dudley High School) for this list, when we look back over it in future years???
Hooker led Dudley to a NCHSAA Class 4-A state championship and a 15-1 record. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 89 and three TDs in the Panthers’ 54-0 victory over Fayetteville Cape Fear to win the title.
For the season, the future Virginia Tech Hokie completed 137 of 221 passes for 2,652 yards with 28 touchdowns and five interceptions. He ran for 1,236 yards and 27 TDs….Hooker was having a very good basketball season for Dudley HS, before he left out last Friday to enroll early at Virginia Tech and could well have made the All-State Basketball team this year too…..Football numbers on Hooker from the News and Record and Joe Sirera, at www.greensboro.com…

As a wide receiver on Lincolnton’s football team, Surratt helped the Wolves to the state 2A semifinal game. He caught a state-record 129 passes last season for a state-record 2,104 yards and added 28 touchdowns. The touchdowns are the second-most scored in state history. For his career, he holds state records for catches (366), yards (5,926) and touchdown receptions (80).
This basketball season, Surratt averages nearly 37 points, which ranks third nationally, according to national high school website MaxPreps. He also averages 8.7 rebounds and 7.2 assists. Unofficially, he has 2,386 career points, which would rank 14th on the N.C. High School Athletic Association all-time scoring list.
Surratt is two points from 13th. If he continues at his current pace, he would end his career as a top-three scorer in N.C. history. He could also reach the 12-year-old career scoring record of 3,307 points, set by former Eastern Alamance star JamesOn Curry.
If Surratt finishes the season with his 36.9-point average, that would be a state record, too.

One name that I had always heard of that might need to receive some consideration on this list is Brad Evans, who played both football and basketball at Durham High School, and later started in both sports at Duke….Evans was the Greensboro Daily News Athlete of the Year back in the late 60/s/early 70’s….He was one heck of a QB and a killer hoops star too, from what I have read and heard over the years…

Trot Nixon–New Hanover was a very good football and baseball player in the early 90s
Joe Lagarde–East Forsyth..only person in school history to be conference player of the year in football, basketball, and baseball in the same school year! 1992-1993 (MVP of 1992 State Championship game)
^^That Lagarde accomplishment is extremely amazing. I wonder how many people have actually done this. I can’t imagine the number being too high.
Andy, I’m with you, Hooker is one of the most talented kids ever in this area, and also a great student.Hooker only played in the first half of many of the games this year as well as these athletes coming off the field straight to the court year after year. I guess we’ll have to watch to see what his future holds to see if he lives up to those that came before him.

Tripp Welborne who played basketball football and baseball at page High School class of 87. Went on to play football at the University of Michigan. He was a All-American there also doing his career he played on both sides of the ball. Was a definite first round draft pick until he sustained a knee injury during his senior year.He still had an opportunity to play in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings…. a phenomenal athlete
Ray Farmer of Glenn High School 1992, played baseball , basketball, and football. Think baseball won State 4A at Glenn in 92.
Drafted by Seattle Mariners out of High School in 21st round
Chose to go to Duke on a football scholarship instead
Played baseball at Duke 1 season. Mariners drafted him again in 1995 and instead he went to the NFL after being drafted the Philadelphia Eagles. Played 4 seasons with Eagles and 1 with Panthers.
He worked in front offices for the Falcons, Chiefs and then was the GM with the Browns. Last time I seen or heard he was doing NFL analysis for ESPN now.
Not many people get drafted in 2 separate sports and get drafted twice in same sport by same team. I’d say he has done pretty well for himself.
Another one of those 3 sport stars was Ethan Albright over at Grimsley and then made it big in football with UNC and the NFL…
