Elon T&F Phoenix Completes Day One at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Competing in its first meet in over a month, the Elon University women’s track and field team opened the 2017 calendar year on day one of the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday, Jan. 13, inside the Rector Field House.

RESULTS
The Phoenix had a few outstanding performances while shaking off some rust in its first meet since competing on Dec. 3. Desiree Ross clocked a new personal-best and the third-best time in school history in the 300-meters with a 40.78. She also ran a time of 7.92 in the 60-meter dash.

Corey Weiss had a new personal-best in the one-mile run with her time of 5:15.04. In the 1,000-meter run, Chelsea Smith garnered a top-10 finish with a time of 2:58.41. Ellie Bennett finished third overall in the pole vault with a cleared height of 10’ 10” (3.30m) while teammate Nicole Karabas was fifth with a mark of 10’ 4” (3.15m).

Carrie Abraham was the Phoenix’s top finisher in the long jump with a mark of 18’ 0.25” (5.49m) and was sixth overall. Teammate Emily Dixon just finished outside of the top-10 with her leap of 17’ 1.50” (5.22m). Briana O’Grady also had a top-10 finish for the maroon and gold in the weight throw with a toss of 48’ 7.5” (14.82m).

Elon concludes the meet tomorrow, Jan. 14, with action starting at 11 a.m. with the women’s high jump.
