College Men’s Basketball Final – Guilford 69, Hampden-Sydney 53 with Photos

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Carson Long scored a game-high 17 points to lead Guilford College to a 69-53 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball win at Hampden-Sydney College Saturday. The win marked Guilford’s first in the Tigers’ Fleet Gymnasium since 2009.

The Tigers (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) took an early 7-2 lead, but the Quakers (5-1, 2-0 ODAC) perked up and embarked on an 18-3 spurt that opened a 20-10 edge with 11:27 in the half. Marcus Curry and Mason Reyer netted four points apiece and the Quakers made five straight shots in that time, including a Reyer three-pointer. P.J. Stephens and Long both knocked down first-half trifectas as the Quakers built a 41-26 halftime lead. Guilford shot over 57 percent from the floor in the opening frame, compared to the Tigers’ 34.5% shooting.

While the Quakers cooled to less than 31 percent second-half shooting, they made 10-of-13 free throws and did not let the Tigers closer than 11 points.

Alston Thompson chipped in 13 points and six rebounds for Guilford, which enjoyed a 41-28 rebounding edge. Dominique Henderson finished with nine points and Curry added eight. Zachary Houston contributed two points, a game-high 12 rebounds and five assists for the Quakers.

Guilherme Guimaraes and Kevin Quinn both scored 10 points for Hampden-Sydney. Logan Samuels contributed six points and a game-best eight assists. Jake Duncan six points and six rebounds for the hosts.

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers break for exams before visiting nonconference rival Methodist University December 10.
