“Battle Under The Lights”:One of the best games and finishes of the Football Season:::SWG 14, Aycock 12

Final on the Wednesday in the Middle Series for this Middle School Football Season:
Southwest Guilford 14, Aycock 12
SWG Cowboys close the season at (8-0) and the Aycock Lions wrap up the year at (6-1)….
The way this game went calls for true Middle School Championship and you could take the Top Four teams with Allen Jay at (7-0) vs. Southeast Guilford at (7-0) and the Winner of that game could play the Winner of tonight’s contest for the “Guilford County Middle School Championship”…
Take the top four teams and let them decide it…
*****Tonight’s game had the second best finish to it, that I have seen all season long and the other Fantastic Finish came in the Dudley at Page game, but tonight, Aycock was down 14-6 to SWG with just 3 seconds left on the clock and Antwan Shaw scored for the Lions from one yard away and with the TD it was 14-12 SWG with 0.00 on the clock and Aycock got their chance to go for the two-point conversion and the Cowboys stopped them in the cold, to hold to win the football game 14-12….*****

The game was tied at halftime 6-6, but the SWG Cowboys grabbed the lead they would not give up, when they scored on a halfback pass play from Quantez Poche to Caleb Curtain and that made it 12-6 Cowboys, then SWG QB Devin Flowers ran the ball for the two-point conversion and it was good and that proved to be the difference in the game, as SWG moved ahead 14-6 with 54.2 seconds left in the 3rd Quarter and Southwest went to win the game, 14-6….

Coach Joey from SWG said this was the sweetest victory for his team this season and with the (8-0) record to show for their efforts and a great win tonight over a quality opponent like Aycock, the Water Jug Bath Coach Joey got after the game did not feel that bad at all….A great sign of sportsmanship as both teams met at mid-field after the game, took a knee and both coaches spoke, with Coach Joey in a season closing prayer and the Aycock Lions coach saying how much it meant to be able to be a part of a classic game, like the one we saw this evening at Southwest Guilford…

Game Scoring Summary:
End of First Quarter:Aycock 0, Southwest Guilford 0

4:17 left in the Second Quarter Devin Flowers to Caleb Curtain on a 37-yard TD pass 2-pt. pass failed and it was, SWG 6, Aycock 0
1:12 to go in the Second Quarter Alonza Barnette hit Jaylyn Williams 22-yard TD pass for Aycock and the run for conversion failed and the score was Aycock 6, SWG 6
Halftime:SWG 6, Aycock 6

Second Half saw a key defensive pass interception by Nicolas Valentine and then SWG hit the scoreboard on the halfback pass from Poche to Curtain and with the Flowers two-point run, SWG moves up 14-6 with 54.2 to go in the Third Q…
End of 3rd Quarter:SWG 14, Aycock 6

Then came that last Aycock Lions’ possession when Shaw scored as time expired and the two-pointer failed to give us the Final:SWG 14, Aycock 6

  1. As one of the coaches at Southwest, I’d like to say that I’m so proud of this team!

With that said, nothing but respect for Aycock Middle and their football program. They have a ton of talent, a great coaching staff, and are a very classy team. Kudos to both squads.

  2. As part of the aycock staff I would just like to say SW played a heck of a game and we played a good game too. Andy last year I saw 2 Jamestown players get interviews I think maybe #2 #5 and #3 should get interviews with you. Very special athletes

  3. Yes I had Devan Boykin from Jamestown and the other young man from Jamestown over to the Shane’s Rib Shack and interviewed them there…

We are gone from Shane’s since Shane’s has closed/gone, but we will keep those young men in mind and try to get them in the future…

We had a real nice interview with the SWG Coach, Coach Joey, about two weeks ago and it is still available on YouTube and he was in there for the interview after the game and he had his daughter right beside him….

Good season for Middle School Football in Guilford County and a heck of a turnout for the game tonight at SWG…

  4. I’m all for a middle school playoffs. I love that they started a Guilford county middle school track meet at the end of the year. It would always be great to see who is the best school in every sport in the county.
