College Volleyball Final – Greensboro 3, Guilford 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Evan Sherer put away a match-high 14 kills and added 16 digs in Greensboro College’s 3-1 home volleyball win over Guilford College Wednesday night in Hanes Gym. The Pride prevailed, 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 25-23, to improve to 10-6. The Quakers saw a three-game winning streak snapped and drop to 7-7.

Greensboro took advantage of shaky Guilford hitting in the first two sets. Sherer put away five kills in the second set, which opened a 2-0 Pride advantage. The Quakers hit in negative figures in the first two games, compared to Greensboro’s .260 hitting percentage.

The Quakers rebounded in the third set for 19 kills on .283 hitting. Christina Seeks led the way with six putaways with no errors in 10 attacks, followed by four kills apiece by Jessica Sheek and Morgan Tompkins. The trio helped Guilford overcome an early 7-2 deficit and score the narrow win.

Greensboro had an 11-7 edge in the fourth game before the Quakers rallied to knot the score at 18-18. Three Guilford hitting errors and a service error from that point forward helped Greensboro clinch the win.

Meredith Summers added 11 kills to Greensboro’s attack and teammate Brandy Johnson had 10 putaways on .364 hitting. Tori Belcher picked up a match-high 28 digs and Darrian Bolt added 25 assists. Shayla Moss and Emily Horn contributed seven kills apiece.

Guilford’s Tompkins and Casey Davis shared team-high honors with nine kills apiece. Tompkins added 10 digs and Davis had 19 as both Quakers notched double-doubles. Christian Ritter paced Guilford with 22 pickups and Tina Eucker set up 34 assists. Sheek finished with eight kills in her first game back from a five-game absence due to injury.

Coach Emily Gann’s Quakers visit league-rival Eastern Mennonite University Saturday (10/1) for a tri-match that includes St. Mary’s University of Maryland.
