Elon Phoenix Volleyball Downs Tribe, 3-0

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team bounced back from a loss Friday to claim a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-16, 25-22) over William & Mary today, Sept. 25, in Alumni Gym for its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season.

The Phoenix (14-4, 1-1) was led by a match-high 16 kills from Kam Terry who finished with a double-double after 13 digs and also had two aces. Sydel Curry also tallied a double-double with a match-high 31 assists and 11 digs, while Sydney Busa recorded 12 kills and eight digs. Maddie Jaudon led all players with 14 digs, while the defense out-blocked the Tribe, 9-1, after five blocks each from Busa and Elizabeth Coil.

The Tribe (6-8, 0-2) saw a team-high 11 kills from Casey Foote followed by Sydney Biniak who finished with nine kills. Katie Kemp and Autumn Brenner shared the setting duties after 18 and 12 assists, respectively, while Gabrielle Pe and Sara Zumback had 12 and 11 digs each.

How it Happened
The Tribe took the early lead in the first set, 9-5, before the Phoenix closed the gap to two, 16-14. Back-to-back kills by Terry continued the Elon rally and started a 6-0 run that was capped by a Busa kill to give the maroon and gold a 20-16 edge. Kills by Ebony Scott and Curry kept the Phoenix in front to win the set, 25-21.

Elon jumped out a 6-1 advantage to start the second set and extended the lead to seven, 10-3, after a W&M timeout. A kill by Terry made it a 19-7 lead to keep the momentum going as a Scott kill closed out the set, 25-16, to give the Phoenix a 2-0 match lead.

Kills by Busa, Terry, Kayla Agae and Michell eKlein all helped the maroon and gold to a 7-4 lead in the third set. The Tribe pulled even as the score reached seven-all and saw three more ties by the time it reached 12-all. A Jaudon ace, kills by Terry, Busa and Curry and a block by Klein and Busa led to a 6-2 run for Elon to take a four-point advantage, 18-14. The Tribe would cut its deficit to one, 20-19, before two blocks by Busa and Coil and a kill by Scott gave the maroon and gold four of the next five points to reach set point. A Busa kill won the set, 25-22, for the Phoenix and gave the team the match sweep.

Elon now leads the all-time series, 5-0…The Phoenix has won both the last two meetings against the Tribe by a 3-0 score…Terry’s 16 kills marked a new three-set career high for the sophomore and her fifth double-double of the season…Her 13 digs were also a new three-set career high…This marked the first time Terry has had a double-double in a three-set match…Curry also recorded her fifth double-double of the season and the 14th of her career.
