Love Stymies ‘Hoppers, Shorebirds Win Eighth Straight
Delmarva Completes Four Game Sweep of Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC – The Shorebirds are the hottest team in the South Atlantic League going into the final weekend of the regular season. Thanks to a 3-1 win on Thursday night in Greensboro, the Shorebirds have won eight games in a row and come home with their playoff hopes still intact.

September literally started with a bang for Delmarva (71-64, 29-37). Cedric Mullins opened the game against Cody Poteet (4-9) with his 13th home run of the season.

The ‘Birds got right back after it in the top of the second. Ronarsy Ledesma reached on a hit by pitch and Stuart Levy doubled him to third base. Steve Laurino popped out to shallow right field, but Gerrion Grim singled on the infield to bring home Ledesma and make it 2-0. Poteet then walked Drew Turbin to load the bases, but Cedric Mullins grounded into a rare double play to close the inning without further damage.

Reid Love (9-10) retired the first 13 batters in a row before Greensboro (65-71, 27-39) finally got to him. In the bottom of the fifth, shortstop J.J. Gould launched his third home run of the series the bring the Delmarva lead to 2-1. It remained that way through the end of the fifth inning.

In fact, that was all that Reid Love surrendered. He left the game after seven brilliant innings in the best start of his career. Love faced one over the minimum and allowed just the solo homer to Gould as he silenced the Grasshoppers. Seven innings is the longest outing of Love’s career.

The Shorebirds added some insurance in the top of the eighth with Alex Murphy’s RBI double to make it a 3-1 game.

Delmarva’s victory was it’s eighth in a row, which eclipsed a seven game win-streak set in mid June as the longest winning-streak of the season. Greensboro dropped it’s 10th game in a row.

The Shorebirds come home for their final series of the season against the Kannapolis Intimidators. Fan Appreciation Weekend at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium gets kicked off on Friday night at 7:05 pm. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 6:50 pm on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
