HiToms keep rolling in win over Petersburg

High Point/Thomasville, N.C. – The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the High Point-Thomasville HiToms (16-6) broke through with seven runs en route to an 8-2 win over the Petersburg Generals (7-16) on Sunday evening.
“We’re fun to watch but still have things to work on,” HiToms Head Coach Brian Rountree said. “We got enough energy considering the trips we’ve been on and the games we’ve been in so I was glad for us to get a win today.”
Anthony Hunter blanked the HiToms for the first four innings only allowing one hit but it all changed with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zac Almond delivered the game-changing blow with a two-run double into right field to break the scoreless tie.
After David Fry reached on an error Hunter Slater smashed a two-run double of his own this time to dead center field putting the HiToms ahead 4-0. Coll Stanley in his second at bat of the inning dropped a base hit down the left field line plating two more runs. The scoring frenzy wasn’t done yet as Brad Jarreau lined a base hit bringing around another in the seven run, six hit fifth inning HiToms rally.
Not out of the fight completely, Petersburg also conducted some two out magic in the top of sixth. Calvin Scott lifted an RBI double to center and Cody Doyle had a RBI single right after falling in front of a diving Derek Scheible in left field.
Steven Bower recorded six innings in the start and surrendered seven hits but was economical on the mound adding four strikeouts. Ryan Kahny sealed off the win for the next innings and the HiToms tacked on an insurance run to boot in the eighth to cruise 8-2.
“Steven (Bower) threw strikes,” Rountree said. “He kept putting up zeros and did a good job today.”
The HiToms are winners of nine straight games and aim to keep rolling at Finch Field tomorrow, June 27 against the Coastal Plain League East Division leading Peninsula Pilots at 7 p.m.
