HPU’s John Brown signs NBA Summer League deal with Hornets

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Former High Point University men’s basketball forward John Brown will join the Charlotte Hornets NBA Summer League Team, his agent announced this week.

Brown will head to Orlando, Fla., with the Hornets for a week-long tournament to showcase his skills. The 25-game, seven-day event will feature two teams from the Orlando Magic, along with the Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Charlotte opens the summer league on Saturday, July 2 with a game against Orlando’s White Team at 11 a.m. and plays the Indiana Pacers on July 3 at 1 p.m. The Hornets suit up against the Oklahoma City Thunder on the 4th of July (5 p.m.), then battle the Dallas Mavericks on July 6 at 3 p.m. Charlotte wraps up the event on July 8 with a championship day game against a team TBA.

Broadcast information for Charlotte’s games will be announced in the coming week.

“It means a lot for Charlotte to take a chance on me,” Brown said. “I never thought I’d be in this position four years ago, so it proves dreams can come true if you just work hard and make the best of the opportunity you’re given. I hope to make Coach Cherry and High Point University proud during my pro career.”

Brown – a two-time All-American and two-time Big South Player of the Year – worked out with the Hornets, Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz ahead of Thursday’s NBA Draft. Brown also can potentially suit up for Boston or Utah in the Las Vegas Summer League July 8-18.
