Elon Tracksters Turn Solid Performances at NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Elon University women’s track and field team saw its 2016 season come to a close as the Phoenix concluded its stay at the NCAA East Preliminaries on Friday, May 27, at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.

The Phoenix had four athletes in competition beginning with sophomore Bryanna Hames in the discus throw. The Charlotte, N.C., native had a toss of 169’ 3” (51.59m) to finish 17th overall in her first-ever NCAA preliminary meet.

Senior Sydney Griffin was next up to compete for the maroon and gold in the 100-meter hurdles. After entering the race as the No. 48 seed, Griffin bested that total by 18-spots as she concluded her Elon career with a 13.62 in the race and was 30th overall.

Jen Esposito had top-15 overall finish in the quarterfinal round of the 400-meter hurdles with the Mansfield, Mass., native racing a time of 57.64 against the top competitors in the country. It was the second-best time for Esposito in her career.

The meet concluded with Tereza Novotna running a 10:23.45 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, native was 23rd in the race for the maroon and gold.
