College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Hampden-Sydney 12, Guilford 0

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hunter Brown’s unassisted go-ahead goal with 6:45 left in regulation pushed host Hampden-Sydney College past visiting Guilford College, 12-9, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinal Tuesday.

Brown’s second score of the day broke the game’s fifth and final tie and helped the third-seeded Tigers (13-5) gain a semifinal matchup with number-two Washington and Lee University Saturday at top-seeded Roanoke College’s Kerr Stadium. The tally also capped a decisive 5-1 Tigers’ game-ending run that erased Guilford’s 8-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.

After a 90-minute delay to the game’s start due to weather, sixth-seeded Guilford (8-9) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. The Quakers outshot the hosts, 11-4, in the first quarter and got two extra-man goals from rookie Joe Eggleston in their opening run.

Brown netted his first goal 71 seconds before halftime and Jake Koferl connected with one second left on the clock to get Hampden-Sydney within 4-3 at intermission.

Senior Daniel Haupt doubled Guilford’s edge with an unassisted tally four minutes into the third quarter. Hampden-Sydney answered with a 3-0 spurt capped by Connor Pool’s man-up goal that gave the Tigers their first lead of the game, 6-5, with 6:12 left in the third.

The teams traded tallies for the next 15 minutes before Brown’s game-winner followed by insurance goals by Kevin Wilhelm and Koferl closed the scoring.

Koferl added two assists and finished with a game-high five points. Brown also had two helpers and four points. Duncan Morris and Chandler Shaheen both contributed two goals for Hampden-Sydney, which outshot Guilford, 32-29, 20-11 in the second half. Jarod Arntzen won 11-of-21 face-offs and picked up a game-best eight ground balls. Mitch Renfrow made 10 stops and caused a turnover in goal.

Alex Brownlee’s two goals and two assists paced Guilford’s offense. Eggleston and Haupt also scored twice and Zachary Berkowitz added two assists. The Tigers shutout the Quakers’ scoring leader, senior Adam Fiore, who ends his illustrious career ranked among the school’s top-nine all-time leaders in goals, assists and points. Classmate Connor Manning won 11-of-18 draws and picked up six ground balls. Parker Styles made four saves in the cage.

The loss ends the college careers of Guilford’s eight seniors, which contributed to 35 wins in their tenure, the third-best four-year total in school history. The eight also helped coach Tom Carmean’s club to its first two ODAC Tournament berths.
