College Softball Finals – Randolph-Macon 7–9, Guilford 2–8

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon College’s Candace Whittemore tallied three RBI over Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Guilford College as the Quakers fell twice to the Yellow Jackets. Randolph-Macon claimed game one, 7-2, and claimed the nightcap, 9-8, in a back-and-forth nine-inning contest.

Makayla Carver put the Quakers (22-14, 6-8 ODAC) ahead in the first at-bat of game one with a home run to spark Guilford’s bats. A Brooks Bray single with two outs in the the top of the third inning extended Guilford’s lead. All of Randolph-Macon’s (26-10, 9-5 ODAC) runs came in the bottom of the fourth frame as the Yellow Jackets placed a runner on first with two outs. Five hits drove in at least one run per at-bat in the inning as the Yellow Jackets produced four singles and a double to seize control of the game. Randolph-Macon allowed only one Guilford hit for the final three innings on the way to a game one win.

The Quakers jumped on the Yellow Jackets early in game two as a Katy Holt two-out three-run home run in the top of the second inning put the Quakers ahead. The Yellow Jackets produced two unanswered runs over the next two innings, scoring one run each inning as Madison Gilman hit a home run in the bottom of the third inning. The Quakers extended their lead back to three in the top of the sixth inning with a two run rally on a Casey Snead single and an attempted double steal. The Yellow Jackets responded with a three-run rally over the next two innings, including a Sierra Ford lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, to tie the game. After each side produced a run in the eighth inning, Shelby Helms connected on her sixth home run of the season to put the Quakers ahead by two runs. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the bottom half of the inning with one out to produce three runs, two on Whittemore’s walk-off double, to claim the doubleheader.

Carver finished the doubleheader four-for-eight with a home run, one RBI, and a stolen base. Bray hit three-for-three in game one with one RBI while scoring three runs in game two. Helms hit two-for-four with two RBI in game two to represent one of two Quakers with a multi-hit effort in the second contest.

Courtney Lackey (8-4) claimed the loss in game one, striking out four and walking three in a complete-game effort. Casey Snead (4-4) took the game-two loss in a complete-game eight and one-third inning effort where she fanned three and walked six.

Nelda Bagey (11-6) took the game one win for Randolph-Macon, striking out two and walking one in a complete-game effort. Whittemore (14-4) took the complete-game win in game two, striking out six and walking two.

The Quakers continued their weekend road trip with a 1 p.m. ODAC doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan College.
