Women’s Lacrosse Closes Regular Season With Victory Over Berry

ROME, Ga. – The Greensboro College women’s lacrosse team closed its 2016 regular season Sunday with a 12-7 victory over the Vikings of Berry College.

Kirstin Norris tallied two goals, while Natalie Ritchey scored her first goal of the day to give Greensboro (12-3) a 3-0 lead.

After Berry pulled within one goal, Norris and Ritchey combined for three more goals to give the Pride a 6-2 lead early in the second half.

Over the remainder of the game, the Vikings did not pull any closer than two goals as the Pride pulled away for the five-goal victory.

“It was a good way to end the regular season today,” Head Coach Christie Hebert said. “We look forward to riding our momentum as we start our chase for a championship next week.”

Norris finished with a game-high seven goals. Ritchey tallied three goals, while Alexa Besch accounted for two goals. Kaleigh Hemstock picked up the win after making five saves.

The Pride women will return to action at 1 p.m. Friday when they take on the Lions of Piedmont College in the semifinals of the USA South Tournament. The tournament will be played in Rocky Mount, N.C., as a part of the USA South Spring Tournament Festival. Baseball Completes Three Game Sweep of William Peace

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of William Peace University with a pair of victories Sunday.

The Pride (9-27, 5-13 USA South) took Game 1, 7-6, before winning Game 2, 4-3.

In the first game, Greensboro jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Pacers (10-25, 2-16 USA South) jumped in front following a one-run second inning and a two-run fourth inning. Zach Neumeister plated J.P. Lisk with a triple before coming in to score on a Kristopher Taveras groundout.

The Pride then retook the lead with a three-run sixth inning, but WPU responded with three runs in the seventh inning. James Wilkins scored the first run of the sixth inning, following a Pacers wild pitch, before Adam Murray and Braedon Jewett recorded one RBI each.

After falling behind for a second time, Greensboro scored the game’s final two runs to secure the one-run victory.

Wilkins finished with a team-high three hits, while Neumeister and Jewett recorded two hits each. Josh Evans pitched the first six innings, while Mitch Choros recorded the win after pitching the final two innings in relief.

The Pacers struck for the first run in Game 2, but Neumeister blasted a three-run home run to give Greensboro a 3-1 lead.

Tyler Henderson added to the Pride advantage with a long ball of his own in the fifth inning before the Pacers pulled within 4-3 with a two-run sixth inning.

The Pride held on down the stretch to secure the victory.

Henderson finished with three hits in the game, while Cody York, Wilkins, and Neumeister had at least one hit. Dustin Minnick picked up the win for Greensboro, and Edward Dorunda recorded his first save of the season.

“Collectively this group played with energy and passion all weekend,” Head Coach Frank Maldonado said. “I am very proud of them for continuing to compete down the stretch as that is what our coaching staff has been stressing to them day in and day out. As a result of them competing, they were rewarded with three good wins this weekend.”

Softball Clinches Tournament Birth With Split With Ferrum

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team secured its spot in the upcoming USA South Athletic Conference Tournament with a series split against Ferrum College Sunday.

The Pride (24-14, 11-9 USA South) took Game 1, 12-3, before dropping Game 2, 4-3.

The Panthers (18-14, 11-9 USA South) tallied one run in the first inning before the Pride struck four times in the bottom half. Allyson Yeager tripled home Madison Crisco, while Sarah Tompkins, Brittany Rush, and Nicole Wallace recorded RBI singles.

Ferrum briefly pulled within one run in the second inning, but the Pride ran off eight unanswered runs to secure the five-inning victory. Tompkins, Connolly, and Yeager each had one RBI during the spurt before Brittany Rush capped off the scoring with a three-run home run to left field.

Tompkins and Rush finished with a team-high three hits, while Yeager and Alexis Hall had two hits. Maddy Wetherholt picked up the win after pitching a complete game.

Tompkins pushed Greensboro out to an early 1-0 lead in Game 2, but the Panthers rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Greensboro then tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but Ferrum took a 3-2 win.

Yeager and Tompkins had a team-high two hits, while Wallace, Hall, and Puckett each had one hit. Dawn Harris struck out three batters but took the loss.

“I am happy for the girls to secure their spot in the conference tournament,” Interim Head Coach Denzel Wallace said. “We were able to get the bats going in the first game, but came up just short in Game 2.”

By virtue of the series split, the Pride was awarded the No. 6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will take on North Carolina Wesleyan at 11 a.m. Friday in Rocky Mount, N.C. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.

Women’s Golf Closes Season With Fifth Place Finish At Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s golf team completed its 2015-2016 season with a fifth-place finish at the Methodist University Spring Invitational Sunday.

Tara Smith led the Pride after finishing the 36-hole event in a 22nd–pl ace tie. Allison Killette finished in 31st, while Mackenzie Flanangan, Alexis Gregory, and Sophia Sedergren also competed for Greensboro.

“It was a tough weekend to close out the season,” Assistant Coach Jim Cantamessa said. “After struggling in the first round due to the conditions, the team battled hard over the final 18 holes.

“Tara (Smith) had a strong weekend for us, while Alexis (Gregory) ground all the way to the end. It was an emotional trip for both of them as it was the final tournament of their collegiate career. I was really proud of them.”

Men’s Tennis Drops Pair

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches Sunday.

The Pride fell to Montreat College to open the day, 6-3, before suffering a 9-0 defeat against Ferrum.

Kevin Nickel and Jervis Garcia picked up a default win at No. 3 doubles before Chris Grissom and Garcia scored default wins in singles.

“The guys played hard and continue to improve,” Interim Head Coach Andy Smith said. “I am very happy with their progress throughout the season.”

Women’s Tennis Tops Montreat But Falls To Ferrum

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College women’s team split a pair of matches Sunday.

The Pride defeated Montreat College 5-2 before falling to Ferrum College, 6-3.

The doubles teams of Ashley Spivey/Molly O’Keeffe and Sarah Drummond/Rachel Hamilton gave Greensboro a 2-0 lead after winning their matches by scores of 8-2 and 8-6.

Spivey and O’Keeffe then won at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions, while Hamilton recorded the decisive point at No. 4 singles.

After topping Montreat, Greensboro dropped its two doubles matches before Spivey, O’Keeffe, and Hamilton recorded their second singles victories of the day.

“I am really happy with the way the girls played today,” Interim Head Coach Andy Smith said. “We played two tough matches and stuck with it the entire way.”
